Detroit also agreed to a $780,000, one-year contract with pitcher Bobby Seay.
The 29-year-old left-hander was 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA in 58 games with the Tigers last season. In 134 major league appearances, he has posted a 4-1 record and 3.97 ERA.
He can make an additional $75,000 in performance bonuses: $20,000 for 55 games, $25,000 for 60 games and $30,000 for 63 games. |

| Seay did a pretty good job, hes a pretty underrated bullpen pitcher in the MLB.
So is (cough) Jonesy _________________ "Contrary to what everybody else thinks, I still think I can come back and help this team."

| 07/05/2008 11:17 PM ET Lefty Seay doing well vs. righties Reliever trying to vary patterns against left-handed hitters By Jason Beck / MLB.com
SEATTLE -- Part of the challenge for a left-handed specialist, Bobby Seay said Saturday, is to keep hitters off-balance the more they see you. He's in the process of doing that against the American League's veteran left-handed bats, but surprisingly, he's leaving right-handed hitters clueless.
For a left-handed reliever, Seay's stats are upside-down from what one would expect. A year after Seay shored up a home in Detroit's bullpen by holding left-handed hitters to a .209 average, they're batting .321 against him now. As surprising as that is, however, it doesn't compare to the .217 average he has held right-handed hitters to so far this season.
To put that contrast another way, only Freddy Dolsi (.210) has a lower average allowed against right-handed hitters among Tigers relievers with at least 50 plate appearances against righties. In fact, among American League lefty relievers with that criteria, Seay's average allowed ranks sixth.
His outing Thursday against the Mariners presented the contrast in a microcosm. Brought in to face lefty bat Raul Ibanez leading off the seventh inning with a 6-2 lead, Seay gave up an opposite-field, ground-rule double on a breaking ball. With switch-hitter Jose Vidro and right-hander Adrian Beltre due up, though, Seay remained in the game and escaped without further damage.
Vidro hit a breaking ball for a lineout to left that turned into a double play when Ibanez slipped trying to get back to second base. Seay then finished the inning by striking out Beltre.
Seay believes he can be effective against hitters on either side of the plate, so he'll obviously take the numbers against righties. But he also knows his role is to get lefties out.
"I just have to concentrate on making better pitches, especially against the guys who have that seen me quite a bit," Seay said.
Part of the challenge, Seay said, is the group of left-handed hitters in the AL Central. Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer are both 2-for-3 against Seay this season, though they didn't face him in the recent three-game series at the Metrodome.
Whether it's a change-of-pitch sequence or a change of location, Seay wants to be unpredictable against left-handed hitters. But he also believes the numbers eventually will even out.

| 08/10/2008 2:00 PM ET Seay coming up big in clutch Southpaw dominating hitters, tops bullpen with 2.45 ERA By Scott McNeish / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Tigers reliever Bobby Seay has blossomed into a go-to guy in Detroit's bullpen.
No longer using him as merely a left-handed specialist, the Tigers have called upon Seay in tough situations.
Such was Saturday's predicament in the sixth inning. With the Tigers clinging to a one-run lead, the Athletics loaded the bases with two away. Manager Jim Leyland had almost everyone in the bullpen available, and he asked Seay to get the big out.
Seay did it -- Daric Barton flied to left to end the inning.
"I was trying to go after him and throw strikes," Seay said. "I knew I needed to get that out."
His poise under pressure impressed Leyland.
"People don't realize what a big out it was, because they're going to look at the scoreboard like it's a big blowout," Leyland said. "That was a huge out. If [Barton] hits a double there, gets a big hit there, you don't know what might happen. It changes how they use their bullpen and everything else, so that was a huge out for us."
Seay has recorded a lot of outs lately. He went through a stretch where he struggled against left-handed hitters, but lately he has dominated hitters on either side of the plate. In his past 18 appearances, Seay has posted a 0.92 ERA and has held opponents to a .167 batting average.
Not an overpowering pitcher, Seay had 25 strikeouts in that stretch. Two came in Saturday's seventh inning -- both looking. This season, he has 39 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings.
"I'm not trying to strike people out, but I'm trying to make quality pitches," Seay said.
In his past eight appearances, Seay has allowed just six hits and two runs. He has a 1-1 record and a bullpen-best 2.45 ERA this season.
