| 08/25/2008 7:25 PM ET Command, game plan keys for Rodney Right-hander looks to harness velocity with more control By Jason Beck / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Fernando Rodney got the message.
The Tigers' closer knows he has to go in with a game plan when he attempts to finish off a game. The start of a good game plan, however, is commanding the pitches with which he has to work.
Manager Jim Leyland talked to Rodney this weekend, after a rough outing on Friday in Kansas City. It was a wide-ranging conversation, Rodney said, but the general point was the same.
"He wants me to know when I go in the game what I'm going to do with hitters," Rodney said.
The key there is knowing what his pitches are going to do. That, Leyland said, is where fastball command comes into play, not velocity.
"I think that starts with commanding the fastball," Leyland said. "If you can't command your pitches, there's no benefit to a game plan. If he gets that, I think he can have a great game plan. Spotting the fastball where you want to throw it on a consistent basis, that makes a lot of things click."
That has been an area of improvement with Rodney at times, lately. He spotted it well enough to get Rangers hitters to chase his four-seam fastball rising up and out of the strike zone last week at Texas, before a rough outing at Kansas City prompted Leyland to have a short, but sweet conversation with his closer.
"I think that's a good pitch," Rodney said of his four-seamer. "Keep the pitch a little high, elevate it. Most power hitters [will chase] a chest-up pitch, because he thinks it's a good pitch."
If he commands that and improves his spotting of his two-seam fastball, it will give him more deception in the elevation, as well as speed. He then can go to work on plotting how he'll use his pitches against hitters.
Part of that plan comes from the catcher, who in most cases has seen the opponent's at-bat and approaches all night. But the pitcher can also pick up ideas through observation.
"He told me a couple things, 'Rodney, now you're the closer, but make sure when you come to the game, you come ready to make the pitch you want to throw," Rodney said. "You have to know the hitter you're going to face."
