| Magglio Ordoņez expects to be back after All-Stars By JOHN LOWE FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER July 9, 2008
Rightfielder Magglio Ordoņez said Tuesday that he expects to return to action in the first series following the All-Star break next week.
The Tigers' first game after the break -- a week from Thursday in Baltimore -- is the earliest that Ordoņez will be eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list.
Ordoņez is sidelined with a pulled side muscle (oblique muscle). In Ordoņez's absence, the Tigers have reverted to a trend from the season's first few months: scoring two runs or fewer. Until Tuesday night's nine-run outburst, they had scored two or fewer runs in four of the eight games without Ordoņez, including the last three.
But those low-run totals might also be a sign of improved pitching league-wide. All of last season, the Yankees had 33 games in which they scored two runs or fewer.
Entering Tuesday, they'd already had 29 games this season in which they scored two runs or fewer, according to Baseball-Reference.com and Retrosheet.org. _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. 07/11/2008 10:45 AM ET Magglio Ordonez to present inaugural family scholarship
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez, in partnership with the Detroit Tigers Foundation, will present the inaugural Ordonez Family Scholarship to Emma Aviles, a graduate of Detroit Western International High School during a pre-game, on-field ceremony this Saturday.
The Ordoņez Family Scholarship was funded by a generous donation to the Detroit Tigers Foundation by Ordoņez and his family. Permanently endowed and administered through the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the Ordoņez Family Scholarship annually awards a $2,500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior from southwest Detroit. Each award is renewable for up to four years for a total value of $10,000.
"My family and I believe in the need to support the Detroit community," said Ordonez. "Having an education is critical to a person's future and we are honored to help provide that to Emma."
In addition to Magglio and his family, also scheduled to participate in the ceremony are Jordan Field, Director of the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Robin Ferriby, Vice President Philanthropic Services, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
"The Ordonez Family Scholarship is a testament to the commitment the Ordonez family made to the Detroit community when Magglio signed with the Tigers in 2005," said Field. "Emma embodies the spirit for which this scholarship was created and will represent the scholarship well as its inaugural recipient." Emma graduated in the top ten percent of her class in June. As a senior, she completed college preparatory, general and advance placement courses. Additionally, she received many awards for her educational accomplishments for overall academic excellence, excellence in mathematics and as a scholar athlete.
While dedicated to her studies, Emma has been active in serving her school, community and church as a tutor, was a member of the Parent Teacher Student Association and participated in the Sabios program. Emma played soccer for three years in high school and balanced her schedule with a part-time job working more than 20 hours a week. Emma will attend Madonna University in the Fall and plans to pursue a program of study in criminal justice.
The Detroit Tigers Foundation is committed to enhancing lives through the game of baseball with a focus on youth, education and recreation. It aids in the development and funding of innovative programs, including field renovation projects that provide the community opportunities associated with the game of baseball, while promoting the good citizenship embodied in the storied history of the Detroit Tigers.
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is a permanent community endowment built by gifts from thousands of individuals and organizations committed to the future of southeast Michigan. The Community Foundation works to improve the region's quality of life by connecting those who care with causes that matter. | Ordoņez expected to return after All-Star break By JON PAUL MOROSI FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER July 12, 2008
Magglio Ordoņez may appear in a one-game injury rehabilitation assignment with the Class A West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said today.
The club has limited options in where to send Ordoņez, because Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie will take All-Star breaks this week, too.
Theres been some discussion, Leyland said. I dont know how its going to play out.
The Tigers will consider Ordoņezs progress today and Sunday as well as the value in a one-game rehabilitation assignment in making their decision.
Leyland expects Ordoņez to rejoin the active roster after the All-Star break. He has been on the disabled list with a pulled oblique muscle since June 29.
Ordoņez was scheduled to take batting practice indoors at Comerica Park.
As we speak, hes doing very well, Leyland said.

| 07/13/2008 1:20 PM ET Ordonez to play rehab game Outfielder expected to return on Thursday against Orioles By Scott McNeish / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Injured outfielder Magglio Ordonez will play in a Minor League rehabilitation game at Class A West Michigan on Monday night. If all goes well, Ordonez will rejoin the Tigers for Thursday's series opener at Baltimore.
"It's important," said Ordonez, who will start at designated hitter for the Whitecaps. "It's important that I feel good and have good at-bats, good swings, see live pitching."
Ordonez, last year's American League batting champion and MVP runner-up, went on the 15-day disabled list on June 29 with a pulled right oblique. He felt a spasm in his side chasing after a foul ball in a game against the Rockies. The pain increased to the point where he was forced to exit the game in the third inning.
On Sunday, he took live batting practice on the field for the first time since the injury. He showed consistent power to all fields.
"It feels good," Ordonez said. "I'm ready."
Ordonez will play with the Tigers' Class A affiliate, because Triple-A Toledo's All-Star break coincides with the Major League break.
He becomes the second Tigers player this season to play for the Whitecaps. Center fielder Curtis Granderson played two games there earlier this season in his return from a broken hand. Pitcher Kenny Rogers also played a game with West Michigan last season.
The Tigers have not announced how they will make room on their roster for the six-time All-Star.
Coming into Sunday's game, the Tigers had lost three straight, being unable to get the clutch hits that have made Ordonez one of the game's top run producers in recent years. They look forward to his return as they attempt to make a second-half push.
"He's our [Albert] Pujols," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said, referring to the Cardinals' slugger. "Whenever you get guys like that back, it's big."

| Monday, July 14, 2008 Tigers' Ordonez 1-for-4 in Class-A rehab start Associated Press
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- Defending American League batting champion Magglio Ordonez has singled and scored a run in a rehabilitation appearance with the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps.
The Detroit Tigers right fielder also reached base on a fielding error, hit a pop-up and grounded out in the Whitecaps' 10-2 win over Peoria Monday night in Comstock Park.
Ordonez is on the 15-day disabled list for a strained oblique muscle in his abdomen.
The Tigers say he could return when Detroit resumes play Thursday at Baltimore.
Ordonez is hitting .307 for Detroit with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. He hit .363 last season. |

| Maggs plays in Class A game, says he's ready for 2nd half BY JON MACHOTA FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER July 15, 2008
COMSTOCK PARK -- Wearing high socks, a No. 30 Whitecaps jersey and hitting third, Magglio Ordoņez went 1-for-4 as the designated hitter in an injury rehabilitation appearance for Class A West Michigan on Monday night. The Whitecaps beat Peoria, 10-2, before 10,592 -- the largest crowd this year at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Ordoņez, playing his first game since suffering a pulled right oblique with the Tigers on June 28 against Colorado, said he felt good following the game.
"I didn't try to do too much," he said. "Everything went good. I seen a few pitches, and I felt good. Swinging, running, throwing -- everything went fine."
Before the game Ordoņez said he would be patient, not swing at the first pitch and try to go deep into the count.
Even though he is known for often attacking the first pitch, Ordoņez did as he said.
In his first at-bat, Ordoņez didn't swing at the first three pitches, then slapped the fourth down the third-base line and beat the throw to first. The single started a two-out rally that led to West Michigan's first two runs, one of which was scored by Ordoņez in the first inning.
His second plate appearance came with two outs and the bases loaded in the second. He took the first pitch, then grounded into the hole. The third baseman couldn't snag the ball, and Ordoņez reached on the error.
Ordoņez took the first two pitches in his third appearance in the fourth, then popped to foul territory near the leftfield line.
His final at-bat ended in a routine grounder to second that ended the fifth. The 2007 American League batting champion took the first three pitches he saw in that appearance.
Ordoņez said he would join the Tigers in Baltimore for a four-game series that starts Thursday night.
"I'll be ready," he said. "I'm a professional, and I know how to prepare myself.
"It's like riding a bike. It's going to come, but it's taking a little time." _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit. ~Al Gallagher, 1971 |

| Tigers option Thomas to Triple-A Detroit makes room on roster for returning Ordonez By Jason Beck / MLB.com
The Tigers made room for Magglio Ordonez's expected return from the disabled list by optioning outfielder Clete Thomas to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday morning. Ordonez was also recalled from his one-game rehab assignment at Class A West Michigan. He'll be formally activated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday before the Tigers open the second half of their season at Baltimore.
Thomas and fellow outfielder Matt Joyce became the key cogs in the Tigers' effort to fill in for Ordonez once he went on the DL on June 29 with a strained oblique muscle. Thomas had been brought back from the DL a week earlier to share playing time in left field with Marcus Thames.
Ordonez's injury meant more playing time for Thomas, who started nine of Detroit's 14 games with Ordonez out. He went 2-for-4 in the Tigers' first game without Ordonez, but went just 6-for-35 after that.
Joyce, who was called up to fill Ordonez's roster spot, went on enough of a hitting tear -- 9-for-22, four home runs, four doubles and six RBIs -- to earn American League Player of the Week honors for the week ending last Sunday. He'll stick around in the outfield picture alongside Thames, while first baseman Jeff Larish remains as an extra left-handed bat and possible fill-in at first base if Miguel Cabrera continues to be hobbled by his left hip flexor.
Ordonez heads into the season's second half with a .307 batting average, 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. Those numbers are obviously off from his MVP runner-up campaign, but he's nonetheless the run producer within Detroit's star-studded offensive attack. After the Tigers heated up in June, they went 7-7 without him. They averaged better than 5.5 runs per game over the 20 games before Ordonez went on the DL, but 4.28 runs per game in the 14 games without him.
