Withstands 100 mph pitches; mandatory in Minors in '10

By Tom Singer / MLB.com

In the wake of several recent harrowing beanings of Major League batters, Rawlings Sporting Goods is introducing a reinforced, heavier batting helmet designed to withstand 100 mph fastballs.

The aptly named S100 helmets will become mandatory wear in the Minor Leagues next season.

Once, he was everywhere. Now he's nowhere.

Once, he was The Man. Now he's just the Invisible Man.

Once, he was the most high-profile player in his entire sport. Now Barry Bonds is so low-profile, he could be a plot line on "Without a Trace."

We know Bud Selig isn't out shopping for "wish you were here" cards for his favorite history-maker these days. But it sure seems strange to be starting another baseball season without the home ...

Baseball's beauty wins out in 2008

After all these years, game still surprises, unifies fans worldwide

A year in the life ... 365 days in the continuum. No beginning, no end, an endless loop of memorable moments, around the horn or around the bases, uplifting or demoralizing.

For baseball, 2008 began with repudiation, placed in front of a Congressional inquiry into the use of performance-enhancing drugs, and from there unfolded as a reaffirmation ...

Postseason of change

Like autumn leaves, the baseball landscape is changing colors.

There will be no important October baseball in New York for the first time since 1993, but both Los Angeles teams are in the same postseason for just the second time ever.

This fall's cast brings a host of other juicy story lines, too -- from a fat cat seeking seconds (the defending champion Red Sox) to the hungry (the Brewers and Rays never have won a World ...

Call me insane, but after closer inspection I would give the award to.....Roy Halladay.

Here's why....

While his ERA (2.78) is worse than Lee's (2.54), it's reasonably close. While he has fewer wins (20) than Lee (22) he is still a 20-game winner and that's pretty impressive. Here's what makes Halladay ...

It is one way Greg Manning talked to his wife, Lauren, while she was in a coma and then during her immediate recovery after suffering burns over 80 percent of her body in somehow escaping the World Trade Center that morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

By Tim Dierkes [July 14 at 9:00am CST]

Cheers to MLB for following George Mitchell's suggestion and creating an investigative unit. It's already helping to crack down on a couple of serious scandals, along with the FBI. I also like ESPN's hiring of Mark Fainaru-Wada and T.J. Quinn. If I had something to hide, I wouldn't want these guys on the case.

Craig Biggio left Major League Baseball on his own terms. He joined the 3,000-hit club last June, took a farewell tour with the Astros and retired at the end of the 2007 season. Now he's ready to embrace a new role as coach of his son Conor's baseball team at St. Thomas High School in Houston.

It took Mike Piazza a little longer to come to grips with reality. Last week Piazza ...

McALLEN, Texas (May 23) - Even though small independent baseball leagues notoriously try to draw fans with promotions like "vasectomy night" and "midget wrestling," these two teams had good reason to swap a right-handed pitcher for 10 bats.

The Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League couldn't get newly signed pitcher John Odom into Canada for immigration reasons. And the Laredo Broncos ...

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Mike Piazza is retiring from baseball following a 19-season career in which he became one of the top-hitting catchers in history.

"After discussing my options with my wife, family and agent, I felt it is time to start a new chapter in my life," he said in a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano. "It has been an amazing journey."

The 39-year-old Piazza was not on a team this season.

What ur opinion on dh rule? I think its stupid. Pitchers need to bat like in old days and nl. I apploud leyland for using sheff in OF. Guys making millions should do more than just hiting. If they cant play field they need retire. Pitchers can bat look Micah Owings. Average .417 1 homerun. 4 homerun last year. He could prolly bat every day and b good. Y only do half job? Thoughts.

U.S. GM not considering Clemens for Olympics

May 8, 2008

Roger Clemens isn't welcome on the U.S. Olympic baseball team.

U.S. general manager Bob Watson said yesterday that he isn't considering the right-hander, 45, for his roster for the Beijing Games. "We don't need that type of distraction," Watson said.

In addition to his duties as vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball, Watson is general manager of professional baseball operations for USA Baseball.
