Connolly then retired the next two batters, Trevor Crowe on a liner to second and Josh Rodriguez on a strikeout looking. Gimenez stepped in and doubled home Constanza for a 3-0 Akron lead. The ‘Wolves then made a call to the bullpen for Anthony Tomey. Tomey gave up a single to Wes Hodges, scoring Gimenez, for a 4-0 lead. Tomey struck out Head to end the inning.

The SeaWolves offense was limited to just three hits in the game. Westbrook went six and the bullpen of Jeff Stevens and Scott Roehl tossed the final three innings to complete the shutout. Erie’s offense did not get a runner passed second base in the game.

Connolly (0-4) worked 7.2 innings, a season-high. He allowed four runs on eight hits with a walk and he struck out a season-high four batters. He did not allow a runner passed first base in his first 6.1 innings of work in the game.

St. Pierre and Caonabo Cosme followed the homer with back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners for Kirkland. Kirkland flew out to center and on the play, the throw to the plate from centerfielder Bubba Bell skipped in front of the catcher John Otness and went to the backstop allowing St. Pierre to score, putting Erie up 5-0.

The five runs would be plenty as Josh Rainwater (5-2) dealt through 6.2 innings. He allowed just four hits with a walk with six strikeouts. The six punchouts tied a season-high which he has now done for the fourth time and the second time in as many starts. Rainwater is Erie’s first five-game winner and he is 3-0 in three starts since returning from the disabled list. It was also the first time in nine starts where Rainwater did not allow a run.

Juan Cedeno tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and Casey Fien tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout.

The shutout was Erie’s fourth on the season and the club’s first at Jerry Uht Park. The win also gives the ‘Wolves a season series split with Portland (3-3). Erie also leads the all-time series against the Sea Dogs 34-32.
