This has only been on a few minutes but it's pretty stupid. What is this stupid opening number musical thing with Hugh Jackman? It's pretty stupid.

Penelope Cruz - Vicky Cristina Barcelona

She's Spanish so I guess I'm glad she won. Like most awards, I don't really care though.

Best Original Screenplay (Presented by Steve Marin and Tina Fey):

Dustin Lance Black - Milk

That was my guess. That film is nominated for best picture so winning this award probably helps its chances. Luckily it wasn't Wall-E that won

That acceptance speech might not make conservatives very happy

Simon Beaufoy - Slumdog Millionaire

I guessed this one right, too. This film was nominated for best picture so at the moment I'd guess this or Milk will win best picture.

Acceptance speech was rather dull.

The announcement of nominees is really slow. I thought they just went, "the nominees are X,Y,Z,etc". Instead they spend a few minutes discussing each nominee

Best Animated Film (Presented by Jennifer Aniston and Jack Black):

Wall-E

These movies all look stupid. One of them had to win though.

Speech wasn't memorable.

La Maison En Petits Cubes

It seems weird a movie like any of these can win. They all seemed so weird from the quick preview. This film is 12 minutes long so short is the right word for it. The film is Japanese so I guess it is noteworthy that a foreign film won an award. Then again I don't follow what happens with shorts so I don't know if that is typical or not.

Speech wasn't bad considering the guy probably doesn't speak English as his first language.

Best Art Direction (Presented by Sarah Jessica Parker and Daniel Craig):

Donald Graham Burt, Victor J. Zolfo - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I was hoping one of the other four would win, but it's not that big of a deal that this one won.

Speeches weren't interesting.

This film has now won two Oscars.

What a terrible speech! All he did was read off a bunch of names. He didn't seem at all excited. I'll bet Bill Gates would be more excited to win a nickel than this guy was to win an Oscar.

Best Cinematography (Natalie Portman and Ben Stiller...they were awful):

Anthony Dod Mantle - Slumdog Millionaire

This film has now won two Oscars, the second to do so this year.

Another average speech.

Best Live Action Short (James Franco and Two Others):

Jochen Alexander Freydank - Spielzeugland (Toy Land)

I was hoping New Boy would win as it is from Ireland but I don't really care. This film was German so maybe a foreign language film winning an Oscar for a short isn't a big deal.

Speech was okay.

Best Supporting Actor (Presented by Five People):

Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight

This was supposed to be the biggest shoe-in of the night so that's no surprise. He's the second actor ever to win an Oscar posthumously.

Speech was made by his mother, father, and sister. It was decent.

Best Documentary Feature (Presented by Bill Maher):

James Marsh and Simon Chinn - Man on Wire

I don't know much about this, but the first sentence or two but it seems boring.

Three people received an Oscar for this so I don't know who they all were. Their speech was pretty good.

No real opinion here.

Decent speech but the last one was vastly superior.

Best Visual Effects (Presented by Will Smith):

Eric Barba, Steve Preeg, Burt Dalton, and Craig Barron - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

That's the third Oscar for this film.

Speech wasn't exciting.

That is four Oscars for this film. I'd say it's going to win Best Picture. I'm sick of this film. It doesn't seem particularly interesting and I didn't want it to win so many awards.

Jerry Lewis. This is an honorary award. There were no nominees.

Speech was okay.

Best Original Score (Presented by Zac Efron and Alicia Keys):

A.R. Rahman - Slumdog Millionaire.

That gives this film five Oscars which is starting to be quite a few. I'm pretty pissed off this won instead of Milk - Danny Elfman was nominated for Milk and he did The Simpsons theme so I was hoping he would win as he's never won an Oscar.

This speech was pretty bad.

A.R. Rahman and Gulzar - "Jai Ho" (Slumdog Millionaire).Slumdog Millionaire had two nominations out of the three so it was pretty much assured it was going to win. That gives this film six Oscars so far. It also gives Rahmn two Oscars tonight which seems noteworthy.

Slumdog Millionaire is now the 34th film to win at least six Oscars, the first since The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2003.

There's another award for this film That gives it 7. Obviously it will win best picture.

This is now the 24th film win 7 Oscars. It will be the 15th film with 8.

Speech wasn't good either.

Kate Winslet - The Reader

This seemed to be the consensus pick so it isn't much of a surprise.

Speech was okay but she was too out of breath the whole time from excitement or something. Speech probably should have been shorter, too.

Best Actor in a Leading Role (Presented by Five Former Winners):

Sean Penn - Milk

I predicted this one. That gives this film two Oscars. That also gives Penn two Oscars for Best Actor in a Leading Role. While this feat has been duplicated, no man has ever won that award more times (Katherine Hepburn won the female equivalent four times).

Decent speech. The end was quite left-wing.

Best Picture (Presented by Steven Spielberg)

Christian Colson - Slumdog Millionaire

That gives the film 8 Oscars - it's the fifteenth film with that many.

That takes care of the ceremony. There's some wrap-up but I don't care enough to watch.

At some point I'm going to have to see Slumdog Millionaire since it won the best picture and I'd like to see them all. I am not really looking forward to that.

I will also try and see Departures as I'd like to see every film that has won the award for best foreign language film.

I still say "Gran Torino" should have been nominated;


The Wrestler was also a good film despite its Sopranos style ending

And it really sucked that NASCAR was on FOX last night

I'm glad Sean Penn won, he was really good in Milk, but I have to admit, that was the only film I'd seen. I have Gran Torino and Rob said it was good but I haven't seen it so

I was glad he won because I love Sean Penn, I don't even care that he is so left-wing he's insane
