After another disgusting loss I need to get my mind off the team. I've been waiting for quite some time to see this. I'll probably start watching in an hour or so.

Okay, movie is over. It's a long one and it's complicated and probably requires a rewatch in order to really get it.

With that said, it was a pretty good movie. The storyline, while very complex, is pretty entertaining and the acting is top-notch. I'm a little surprised that Marlon Brando won the Academy Award for best leading actor though. While he did a good job, it didn't seem like he had as big a role as say Al Pacino.

I suppose there is a ton to say about this but it's probably all been said plenty of times by people who have watched the film more than once so I won't attempt to say anything all that profound about it. It's rated R although I didn't think it was that violent and I think PG-13 would have been appropriate.

While watching this there were numerous scenes that were somewhat familiar despite the fact I've never seen this film (the horse's head, etc.) but that is to be expected for a film of this nature. It's been referenced in numerous places.

I guess that's about all there is to say. The film is probably worthy of a higher score, but I was paying attention to this and my ratings are based on the first view as long as I pay attention. I didn't understand all the subtleties the first time and because of that the score will suffer somewhat.

84/100

The R rating was very appropos for 1972. The French Connection would not come out for another year. This might have started the disaster movie genre, or the impetus for it. Geez, what a gawd-awful fad THAT was....

The MPAA rating system sucks though. Why do they have an NC-17 rating if they are afraid to use it? The ESRB rating system (videogames) is just as bad. Why have an AO rating if you don't use it and if the console manufacturers say they won't allow AO games on their systems?

Roger Ebert (I think) is a big critic of the system.

It was actually different back then. No NC-17 back then, just G, GP, (not PG, that was later), R, and X.

And they used to use X! Midnight Cowboy was rated X and won the Academy Award for best picture. Now anything rated X (and by that I mean NC-17) is just thought of as porn.

Back to The Godfather for a moment. The line "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" is supposed to be the 2nd most famous in the history of American cinema (behind "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" ) but it didn't really do much for me in this movie. It was used by a bunch of guys and never was it all that profound.

Very much overdone, not only in the movie but many ads, both TV and print, afterward.
