James' version was released on the local label, Snap Records and sold well in the tri-state area of Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. However, lacking national distribution, the song quickly disappeared. James moved on, breaking up the Shondells, and finishing high school. In 1965, unemployed James was contacted by a Pittsburgh disc jockey. The DJ had started playing "Hanky Panky", and it had become popular in that area.
Tommy then decided to re-release the song, travelling to Pittsburg where he hired a local group to be the Shondells (the original members declined to re-form). After making appearances on TV and clubs in the city, he took a master of "Hanky Panky" to New York, where he sold it to Roulette Records. "The amazing thing is we did not re-record the song," James told Bronson, "I don't think anybody can record a song that bad and make it sound good. It had to sound amateurish like that. I think if we'd fooled with it too much we'd have fouled it up." It was released promptly and took the top position of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in June 1966.

Regardless of inspiration and meaning, when released as a single in June of 1969, "Crystal Blue Persuasion" became one of the biggest hits for the group, peaking at number two on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. The single version differs from the album version of the song, with horn overdubs added to the mix and a longer bongos overdub before the third verse.

Ok, I'm not a huge Idol fan, but I do watch that show. Interesting, the contestants had to sing '60s music tonight. Here's what they chose (some are already on here)...

I have not really watched American Idol very much in the past either, but this year I have and I am impressed by the 24 contestants so far. Tonight was not bad watching the male contestants. Tomorrow night 2/20/08, the 12 female contestants will be singing. It will be interesting hearing their choices in 60's music.
Of course, Simon is being typical Simon in his comments, but he actually was nice to three of the guys.

Last night was the first time this season that I actually sat down to watch a full episode of that show. I don't like the auditions at all, I think it's useless to show them. Everything that I needed to see in the auditions I saw last night.
My predictions - The guys that sang "More Today Than Yesterday" and "Jailhouse Rock" will be kicked off. _________________

That's hilarious. That's like something my music professor would have taught us. I mean we all know that Buddy Holly had little influence, the Beatles greatest hits were "Yesterday" and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (this was such a big hit it went #1 for someone else and didn't chart for them ) and Bruce Springsteen is probably the greatest artist in Rock 'n' Roll history. _________________ Coming soon: A better signature!

Back to music, I'm trying to find a song that I don't know if I like or not. Maybe someone can help me.
I can't recall any of the lyrics or the artist. I think (but am only about 50% certain) that the word Brothers is in the artist's name. The song peaked at #11 and spent 5 (or possibly 6) weeks there.
The song is 11 minutes long although it was also shorter (like most long songs). It had a cowbell in the background throughout most of the song.
EDIT: Wow! Wikipedia is amazing! By searching "cowbell" I found the song - it's Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers. I still can't figure out if I like this or not. _________________ Coming soon: A better signature!

I still can't decide
I've never had this much trouble deciding. I really like the first 10 seconds or so but it gets kind of repetitive and stuff. The 11 minute version is way too long but I hate radio edits (although this one seems better). I don't know what to do - get the 11 minute version, the short version, or no version. _________________ Coming soon: A better signature!
