Ex-Hens rave about Lambert
BY JOHN LOWE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • August 24, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dane Sardinha was impressed with Chris Lambert when he caught him at Triple-A Toledo this season.

"I was just telling somebody recently that they need to give him a chance up here and see what he can do," said Sardinha, now the Tigers' backup catcher.

Tigers outfielder Matt Joyce, who began the year with Toledo, said of Lambert, "When I was playing with him, he had all the necessary tools you need to be a good pitcher, especially in this league. He controlled his fastball very well, he had a good off-speed pitch, and he mixed up his pitches to keep hitters off-balance."

Sardinha and Joyce smiled Saturday when they learned that Lambert is being called up to start Tuesday night against visiting Cleveland, taking Nate Robertson's spot in the rotation. It will be the right-hander's major league debut, and he is due to oppose left-hander Cliff Lee, 18-2 this season.

Lambert was 12-8 at Toledo with a 3.50 ERA, the fifth-best, as of Saturday, among starters in the International League. He has allowed only seven homers in 149 1/3 innings, and Sardinha says that's because Lambert keeps the ball down.

Lambert, 25, was a first-round pick of the Cardinals in 2004. They traded him to the Tigers last season for left-hander Mike Maroth. Lambert pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Tigers in spring training this year and didn't allow an earned run.

"From what I saw in spring training, he's a control guy with a pretty good breaking ball," said Tigers bullpen coach Jeff Jones. "He's obviously going to need to keep the ball down because he's not overpowering.

"He's done a very nice job down in Toledo. I've talked to (Mud Hens manager) Larry Parrish a couple of times in the last week about him, and he said he's been very consistent."

The Tigers don't have to make a roster move to clear room for Lambert until after Monday's game. Manager Jim Leyland wouldn't say whether Lambert will remain in the rotation beyond Tuesday.

Tigers will call up Chris Lambert to pitch Tuesday
BY JOHN LOWE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • August 23, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Right-hander Chris Lambert will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Tuesday in place of Nate Robertson, who has been sent to the bullpen.

It will be the major-league debut for Lambert, who is 12-8 with a 3.50 ERA for the Mud Hens.

He will face Cleveland's Cliff Lee, who is 18-2 and has been the top pitcher in the majors this season. A roster move will be made before Tuesday to make room for Lambert on the 25-man roster.

I feel bad for him, but this is El Majores. Sink or swim.

If Lambert is the best they have to offer in the minors, then they might as well keep Robertson in the rotation...

Lambert will get another start; Larish plays third
Tom Gage / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Chris Lambert's first stay in the majors lasted one day. But he'll soon get another.

A day after the rookie right-hander made his major-league debut in a 10-4 loss to Cleveland, the Tigers optioned Lambert to Toledo and recalled infielder Jeff Larish, who was hitting .250 with a 21 home runs and 64 RBI for the Mud Hens.

Primarily a first baseman, Larish will be used at third base as well. He started at third Wednesday night, in fact, in the series finale against the Indians.

Lambert allowed six runs, but only two earned, in the 2 2/3 innings he lasted in his debut. However, manager Jim Leyland said he'll return from Toledo to start Tuesday night for the Tigers against Kansas City.

"I just don't think it's right to give a guy one start," said Leyland. "It wasn't great obviously, but we didn't help him much. I don't have it in my heart not to at least give him another shot. After Tuesday, he'll remain with the club for the rest of the year, but I can't guarantee he'll be starting the rest of the year."

Because he did so well the first time. Rolling Eyes

And it looks like Larish has passed Hessman on the 3rd baseman depth chart. Rolling Eyes

Why are we sending him down if we are bringing him right back up?

Because Guillen still can't play 3rd base and they needed a firstbaseman to take over.

Also, when we need him next, the rosters will expand to 40 man, so we don't have to send anyone down to bring him up again.

We should call Hess up. Bobrobs right. Larish cant perform at a n ML level, hes showed that. Hessman needs a chance to show whetther or not he can perform.
Get it right, management.
