...
To fill Jones' spot on the 25-man roster, the Tigers purchased the contract of right-hander Gary Glover, who had joined Triple-A Toledo less than two weeks ago. Signed on August 9, Glover made three appearances out of the Mud Hens bullpen, tossing four scoreless innings with three hits and four strikeouts. He pitched 34 innings over 29 appearances for Tampa Bay this season, posting a 5.82 ERA before the Rays designated him for assignment on July 28. |

| 08/01/2008 9:50 PM ET Glover opts for free agency Reliever can now sign with any club interested in right-hander By Bill Chastain / MLB.com
ST. PETERSBURG -- Gary Glover has rejected his outright assignment and elected for free agency.
The veteran right-hander can now sign with any club interested in acquiring his services.
On Monday, the Rays activated the right-hander off the disabled list and promptly designated him for assignment.
Glover, 31, went on the 15-day disabled list on July 11 with a left calf strain and the Rays used his roster spot to activate Troy Percival. But upon Glover's return, the Rays did not feel they had anyone in the bullpen they wanted to bump in favor of Glover, who was 1-2 with a 5.82 ERA in 29 games this season.
Glover, who is making $1.075 million this season, appeared in 67 games for the Rays in 2007 and posted a 6-5 record with a 4.89 ERA.

Todd Jones back to the DL
August 17th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Todd Jones is back on the disabled list. After 1 outing. Makes you wonder why he was brought off the DL in the first place doesn’t it? Of course it did take him a half hour to get out of that inning so that may explain it. Or perhaps Todd is toast and he’ll just finish the year on the DL instead of being outright released.
Oddly, Gary Glover had his contract purchased by the Tigers to fill Todd’s spot in the bullpen. Glover wasn’t even in the organization until last week when he was added to Toledo. Glover appeared in 29 games for the Rays this year with 18 walks and 22 strike outs in 34 innings. I don’t get this at all. Why not give Casey Fien a shot? Or bring back Francisco Cruceta who is striking out everybody in Toledo (or at least everybody he doesn’t walk) with 52 K’s and 20 walks in 36 innings? Or bring back Clay Rapada who is already using an option year and move Bobby Seay from lefty specialist to 7th inning guy.
I guess it’s better to give a handful of innings to a 31 year old journeyman pitcher who has wowed coaches in his 3 innings at Toledo. I’m sorry, there may be very valid roster management/option/service time issues at play here. I don’t get it though. |

That seems to be it. _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit. ~Al Gallagher, 1971 |

| 08/18/2008 10:03 PM ET Glover tries to find home with Tigers Reliever looking to land spot on team for '09 season By Jason Beck / MLB.com
ARLINGTON -- After eight Major League organizations and a stint with Japan's Yomiuri Giants in 2006, a change of scenery isn't going to rattle Gary Glover. If anything, it's taught him a lesson over the years.
"Never give up," Glover said. "Just keep working. Baseball is definitely a strange game, but it's a business. At times, moves have to be made."
A month away from pitching, however, was a little bit of a stress test.
Glover had been on the disabled list for the Rays since mid-July with a calf injury. By month's end, he was designated for assignment and refused an assignment to Triple-A Durham, forcing him to sit through waivers for two business days and then a weekend before he could sign with another team.
Glover's final outing with the Rays came on July 10, when giving up seven runs over two-thirds of an inning raised his ERA from 4.05 to 5.82. He didn't pitch to live hitters again until Aug. 9 at Triple-A Toledo.
A week later, he was back in the big leagues.
"It was a trying month," he said, "but you never know for what reason you get put somewhere else. I'm looking at nothing but positives being here, and hopefully, being a part of things here next year as well."
That's kind of how Glover and the Tigers are looking at his stint. He could've looked at other teams or even taken the Durham assignment and hoped for a return trip to Tampa Bay with September callups, but he took an opportunity with the Tigers because he saw an opportunity to get back in the big leagues. He also saw a potential fit beyond season's end.
Glover filled an immediate need in Detroit, but the Tigers are treating this in part as an audition.
"[We'll] check him out," Leyland said. "See what he looks like."
Leyland didn't have a role in mind for him, but he has certainly had the innings to fill lately. Glover, in turn, handled an assortment of roles over his season and a half in Tampa Bay, including a pair of saves. He led the Rays in both relief appearances and relief innings last year, though he ended the season with a 4.89 ERA.

| From what we have seen so far, Glover seems to be a pretty good pitcher.

| Gary Glover is either very shy or very rude. We (attempted to) talk(ed) to him in Cleveland and he just kind of blew us off. _________________
