Ex-Tiger Andrew Miller could have surgery; condition existed in Detroit

The Florida Marlins placed starting pitcher Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right patella tendinitis.

Miller, 23, was scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies, but Josh Johnson will take his place due to the knee injury. He was examined by team doctors on Thursday and will test his knee by throwing a bullpen session in a few days.

The 23-year old Miller has allowed 21 runs while posting an 0-4 record in his past five outings. For the season, the left-hander is 5-9 with a 5.63 earned run average in 20 starts. He has been hampered by the patella tendinitis ever since last year with the Tigers.

To fill Miller's spot on the roster, Florida went down to Double-A Carolina to recall pitcher Jesus Delgado, who has yet to pitch at the big-league level.

According to the Miami Herald, a magnetic resonance imaging exam performed on Miller's knee didn't turn up anything unsightly.

''There's nothing ripped in half and nothing falling off the bone,'' Miller told the Herald

But it did reveal the chronic tendinitis that has hampered him for more than a year and now has put him on the disabled list. It is a condition the Marlins were aware of when they landed Miller in their December 2007 trade with the Detroit Tigers. And it could lead to surgery if the problem doesn't go away on its own.

''The idea is we want to avoid all that stuff at all costs,'' Miller said. ``But I guess [surgery] is one of the potential things.''

He may as well have the surgery done now. He won't pitch for the fish again this year, not with Sanchez ready to come back from the DL. Get the surgery done and take the rest of this time before spring training '09 to rehab and get completely healthy before next year.

Starting to wonder if neither the Tigers nor the fish did well in this trade! All the players are either mentally or physically having problems!
