Earl Averill / 1940 World Series

Nothing much to say about him. He was a Tiger for 2 years and is in the Hall of Fame. He played on the 1940 Tigers team that was defeated by the Reds in 7 games in the 1940 World Series. He had 3 at bats in the series and made 3 outs.

The Tigers blew that series. They won game 1 to take a 1-0 lead. They won game 3 to take a 2-1 lead. They won game 5 to take a 3-2 lead. They lost game 6 4-0.

Bobo Newsom took the loss in game 7 in what was a rather sad series for him. He pitched brilliantly in game 1 with his dad in the stands and got the win. His dad would die the next day. Newsom pitched game 5 with the intention of "...win[ning] this one for my daddy." and pitched a CG-SHO. In game 7 Newsom took the mound on 1 day's rest. This wasn't for his dad; however, "I think I'll win this one for old Bobo." He pitched 0's the first 6 innings but the Tigers managed just 1 run for him. In the 7th inning he'd give up 2 runs. He'd come back to pitch a shutout in the 8th inning but it wouldn't matter. The Tigers couldn't score again. Newsom had a CG on 1 day's rest allowing just 2 runs but the Tigers were defeated.

As a final story for the series, there was just 1 stolen base. The Reds' backup catcher, Willard Hershberger, killed himself (slit his wrists and throat) during the season (the only MLer ever to commit suicide during the season). A Reds' coach, 40-year-old Jimmy Wilson would be the new catcher. He hit .353 in the series and stole the only base.

Wow, thats probably the most amazing thing Ive ever read. About how a guy pitches 2 CG's on one day's rest. Another slits his wrist and the coach plays for him. And the whole thing of winning for your dad. Its amazing.
