Tuesday, April 22, 2008 Cruceta shines in season debut Lynn Henning / The Detroit News
TOLEDO -- Francisco Cruceta appears to be ready.
The Tigers right-hander, who earlier this year spent nine weeks stranded in the Dominican Republic because of visa problems, made his 2008 debut Tuesday and did not disappoint in a three-inning scoreless, hitless appearance for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.
Cruceta pitched in relief against the Columbus Clippers, striking out the side in the sixth on 10 pitches and retiring the side 1-2-3 in the seventh on two ground balls and a fourth strikeout. In the seventh, he added two more strikeouts. He also hit one batter on an 0-2 breaking pitch, and walked another when he went to his mouth successively on a 3-1 count, resulting in an automatic ball being called by the plate umpire.
He retired the other batter in the seventh on a ground ball. No Clippers batter hit a ball out of the infield.
Cruceta's fastball regularly touched 94 mph, and once hit 95. He added a hard slider and a lethal split-finger change-up, the pitch Cruceta added to his repertoire following earlier stints with Texas, Seattle and Cleveland.
Cruceta, 26, is 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds. He said before Tuesday night's game that his visa problems stemmed from last year's 50-game suspension by Major League Baseball for using steroids.
Cruceta pitched last year for the Texas Rangers' Triple-A team at Oklahoma City.
He was signed by the Tigers in November following a sparkling stint for Gigantes del Ciabo in the Dominican Winter League.
The Tigers have until May 10 to decide whether to activate Cruceta to their 25-man big-league roster. Because he is out of minor-league options, the team must either add him to the active roster or expose him to the waiver wire.
Tuesday night's appearance would indicate Cruceta has a reasonable chance of heading to Detroit. Perhaps quickly.

So who do you think they are going to send down to make room for him on the roster? I think it's going to be Miner since he has like a 14 ERA. _________________

He did a great job against the Rangers yesterday. Will that be enough to save his head though? _________________ "I'm on a mission. Mark my words: I'll be back, and I'll be able to do what I've been doing." Joel Zumaya

Well...Cruceta blew another one. Why can't anyone in the bullpen pitch? And why even HAVE a closer when the setup men lose games for us, or we score so many runs, it won't count as a save anyway? _________________ "I'm glad we're in the other division," Terry Francona, manager of the East-winning Boston Red Sox, told the Associated Press. Maybe Jonesy should pitch some 2 inning saves... _________________ "We only work three hours a day, so the least we can do is give 100 percent."

he's gone now. We should put him in the old players section. _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit. ~Al Gallagher, 1971

Well...he's not technically gone yet...just designated for assignment. We have 10 days to do something, which includes outrighting him to the Minors. _________________ "I'm glad we're in the other division," Terry Francona, manager of the East-winning Boston Red Sox, told the Associated Press. It was a joke that this fool was getting so much attention on his way from toledo to detroit. The guy sucks, look at his past. If he was so good, the tigers would have never had a chance to sign him.
