| Ok so I am soooo freaking mad right now. They traded Jair Jurrjens and Gorky Hernandez for Edgar Renteria
| tigers.com wrote: | DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers announced today that the club has acquired shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for righthanded pitcher Jair Jurrjens and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
"We are excited to add an all-star caliber shortstop in Edgar Renteria to the Tigers organization," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "Edgar is a quality player, proven winner and tremendous leader that solidifies our infield."
Renteria batted .332 in 124 games with the Braves in 2007, scoring 87 runs and collecting 30 doubles, 12 home runs and 57 RBI. He tied for third in the National League with a .332 batting average.
A veteran of 12 seasons at the major league level with the Florida Marlins (1996-98 ), St. Louis Cardinals (1999-2004), Boston Red Sox (2005) and Braves (2006-07), Renteria has compiled a .291 batting average (1934-for-6637) in 1,722 games during his career. He has scored 1,021 runs during his major league career, while he has collected 370 doubles, 24 triples, 117 home runs, 762 RBI and 274 stolen bases.
"Edgar is a premier major league player that is a great fit for our club," Tigers Manager Jim Leyland said. "I have a great history with him and I'm looking forward to being reunited with him."
Renteria has been named to the National League's all-star squad five times during his career (1998, 2000, 2003-04, 2006). Additionally, he has won the Silver Slugger Award for National League shortstops three times (2000, 2002-03) and the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for league shortstops twice (2002-03).
Jurrjens started seven games for the Tigers in 2007, compiling a 3-1 record and 4.70 ERA (30.2IP/16ER). In 19 starts with Double A Erie last season, Jurrjens finished 7-5 with a 3.20 ERA (112.2IP/40ER).
Hernandez spent the entire 2007 season with Single A West Michigan and he batted .293 (141-for-481) with 84 runs scored, 25 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 50 RBI and 54 stolen bases in 124 games.

Jurrjens definately has more potential than Bonderman. When I went to a game in Sept., even the old fellow who was working for the Tigers seating fans said he did not like Bonderman any more! He hoped they would trade him while he had SOME trade value!

| If we win the WS in 08, I don't care if Jurrjens and Hernandez become superstars for the Braves! But if we don't win it all with Renteria, this trade might be another John Smoltz like deal that could hurt the Tigers for years to come; I HOPE NOT!

| 03/28/2008 1:19 PM ET Jurrjens keeps celebration on hold Hurler waits until Braves make decision official MLBPLAYERS.com
Jair Jurrjens doesn't want to get too far ahead of himself.
The young starter said earlier in camp that he wouldn't believe he made the Braves until someone told him in person. And even when the club's game notes listed him as the starting pitcher in the third game of the season, Jurrjens still refused to celebrate.
"I suppose that means I made the team," Jurrjens told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I'm still not going to believe it 'til I fly to Washington [for the season opener Sunday]. I'm not telling anyone. I'm still waiting."
Jurrjens reasoned that no one gave him official word and that plenty can still happen between now and the opener.
"That [plan] could change. You always have to be prepared," Jurrjens said. |

| Ex-Tiger Jurrjens keeps his promise
ROCKFORD -- He was born in Curacao, a small Caribbean island. He grew up there, playing baseball and learning to speak four languages. He did not see snow -- or own a jacket -- until he was 19.
Yet, Michigan is something of a second home to Jair Jurrjens. The Tigers signed him when he was 17. He had a breakthrough year with Class A West Michigan in 2005. He debuted with the Tigers in 2007.
The Tigers traded Jurrjens to the Atlanta Braves in October 2007. Jurrjens had a standout 2008 season, leading National League rookies with 13 wins and compiling a 3.68 ERA.
Tigers fans wish he could return. Last weekend, he did, but not in uniform.
Jurrjens came to keep a promise he made to Carmen and David Cox, the Rockford couple who served as his host family while he played for the Whitecaps. Even though he's no longer with the organization and he spends his off-season in Florida and Curacao, Jurrjens vowed to return.
He flew in two Fridays ago, returned to Tampa last Sunday, and did a lot of reminiscing in between. He visited Fifth Third Ballpark, where he pitched as a little-known teenager. He looked at the field, walked into the clubhouse and reflected on how far baseball had taken him.
"It brought a lot of good feelings," Jurrjens said from the Cox home. "I imagined all the fans and how much fun it was to play in Michigan.
"A lot of baseball people don't remember where they came from -- especially what they went through to get to the big leagues. That's the moment you need to appreciate, now that everything is so nice. If you think about where you came from, it's going to make you work harder and stay up in the big leagues."
For some time, the Coxes had planned to invite fellow Whitecaps host families to their home for a party two Saturdays ago. It was only later that Jurrjens chose that particular weekend for his visit.
Suddenly, attendance spiked. A budding star was on his way to the neighborhood.
"When I found out JJ was coming," Carmen Cox said, "my party went from 12 to 35 people."
Jurrjens, a 22-year-old right-hander, could have a long, successful career in the majors. He proved his reliability this year, leading the team -- and establishing personal bests -- in starts (31), innings (188 1/3 ) and wins.
He avoided the disabled list, something he was unable to do during his final two seasons in the Tigers organization. He asked veteran pitchers Tim Hudson and John Smoltz for advice on how to keep his shoulder strong late in the season. The line from his final start -- seven innings, two earned runs against the World Series-bound Phillies -- showed that he was a good student.
Braves television broadcaster Joe Simpson said Jurrjens has become a favorite among Atlanta fans because of his engaging smile, pleasant demeanor and competitiveness.
"To simplify it: He gets it," Simpson said in a telephone interview. "Even at that age, he knows what he has to do to prepare to win and be part of a team."
During this past season, it was easy for Tigers fans to lament that Jurrjens was not there to help rescue a beleaguered rotation. He and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez had been traded to Atlanta for shortstop Edgar Renteria -- a deal team officials believed would solidify their championship-caliber lineup. Instead, Renteria was a disappointment on offense and defense.
"No question, it was a miscalculation," president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said at the end of the season. "I wish I had Jurrjens back, but you have to give something up to do things. We knew we were giving up a good player."
Jurrjens bears no grudge against the Tigers. ("If Renteria had a good year, nobody would have said it was a bad trade," he said.) He understands that his shoulder tendinitis in 2007 and two poor starts to end the season might have contributed to the trade.
He kept track of his former team this season, particularly after so many of his minor league teammates were promoted to the major leagues.
"A lot of people think if you have a team of superstars, it's going to bring you to the playoffs," Jurrjens said, when asked about the Tigers' dismal season. "Teams who go to the playoffs are teams who can play together. When you have a lot of superstars, they have a lot of egos.
"When I came up, the team was so united. Everybody was getting along with each other. I can't remember who I was talking to, but they say it's not the same thing (as) when I came up. I didn't ask who -- they just say it wasn't the same environment.
"I think everybody was trying to press so much -- be the leader, be the superstar."
Jurrjens is among 12 prospects who have reached the majors since playing at Double-A Erie in 2007. He has had the most success of any player in the group.
Perhaps because of his experience in Erie, Jurrjens believes that it's best to promote a group of players from within, rather than trade prospects for veterans.
"Definitely," he said. "They know each other. They know the character. They know how to get along with each other. They know how to play together -- that's most important.
"Being a pitcher, the infielder knows what your pitches do. They can help by moving to the right, moving to the left. That can help saving a hit or a run."
Carmen Cox has noticed a "night and day" difference in Jurrjens since first meeting him.
When he was pitching for the Whitecaps, Cox said, "his emotional maturity wasn't quite there." Now, she sees his composure and professionalism on the mound.
"I think he is living in a dream, and, because of that, he doesn't want to do anything to leave a legacy that is anything other than a positive one," Cox said. "He's worked so hard to get here that I don't think he's taking any of that for granted."
As long as Jurrjens continues to pitch well, the Tigers will have no choice but to be reminded of him. If it is any comfort, Jurrjens is not about to forget the people he met in Michigan, either.
"This is a place," he said, "that's going to be in my memory."
