| I got this from from detnews.com
-------------------------- Lynn Henning analyzes players, The Detroit News
Todd Jones,
Tigers closer
Age: 39 (April 24, 1968)
B/T: left/right
Ht./wt.: 6-3/230
G W-L S ERA 2007 63 1-4 38 4.26 Career 937 54-62 301 3.93
The Tigers quietly have been as clear on the Jones issue as they have been with respect to Rogers. They would like to sign him for one more season while waiting to move Joel Zumaya into the closer's role at an appropriate speed
The question is whether Jones will view the Tigers as his best option.
Although he turns 40 in April, Jones, who has racked up 115 saves the past three seasons, conceivably could draw a two-year offer from some team that finds itself in a pinch. Jones has said neither money nor length of any forthcoming contract are as important to him as making the right choice, based on family considerations and what he believes remains in his tank.
For that reason, it has been assumed he will re-up for another season.
What might change the landscape is if a team closer to his Alabama residence -- Atlanta, specifically -- were to make him an offer, though there is no indication the Braves have Jones in mind.
• Tigers' chances: 80 percent --------------------------
You think 80 percent is realistic? I would say it's rather high. |

Monday, March 17, 2008 Rob Parker Jones will make you sweat, then smile
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Like it or not, Todd Jones is the key for the Tigers success.
Forget about that second-to-none lineup everyone is drooling about. Scratch that starting rotation filled with big-time potential. And discount the guidance of manager Jim Leyland, who already has won a World Series.
None of it will matter if Jones can't finish the job, closing out the games at the end.
Most great teams, teams that have won the World Series, have had a lights-out closer.
For years now, Jones, the right-hander in his second and most successful stint with the Tigers, has been taken for granted -- fans always expect the worst.
"Everybody waits for the other shoe to drop," Jones said. "That's the way it goes.
"People see what they want to see with me. If I do good, it's just a matter of time before I screw it up."
Jones, who turns 40 on April 24, has a chance to do something no one has done in MLB history -- save 40 at age 40.
Getting the job done
Despite fans' complaints, he has been very good the past two seasons, collecting 38 saves last season and 37 in 2006. He was a huge reason why the Tigers reached the World Series two years ago.
"If you like me as a pitcher, you see that he makes pretty good pitches and gets out of the jam most of the time," Jones said. "If you don't like me, you say this guy's a clown and it's just a matter of time before he falls apart.
"I'm used to it so I don't care."
Fans, though, have a right to be concerned this spring. Jones got off to a rocky start in Florida. In six games, Jones has allowed 10 earned runs on 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings. His ERA is 15.88.
But Jones has worked out a few things and has pitched back-to-to back scoreless outings, including one inning against the Yankees in Lakeland on Saturday.
"It's been mechanics," said Jones, nicknamed "The Rollercoaster" by Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell for his up-and-down style. "The last time out I felt pretty good, felt better."
If Jones is right, the starters don't have to be great. With this lineup and its potential to score six runs a game, the starters just have to be good -- go six or seven innings and allow fewer than five runs -- and they have a chance to win.
If the bullpen excels.
"Your closer is always a huge piece of the puzzle," Leyland said. "But I'm not concerned about Todd Jones.
"He's been one of the best in baseball the last two years."
The key to greatness
First-year Dodgers manager Joe Torre many times has pinned his success with the Yankees on Mariano Rivera. And with good reason. Despite all the great players and awesome lineups the Yankees have put together en route to 13 straight postseason appearances, they never could have won four World Series without him.
Rivera has 34 career postseason saves and a postseason ERA of 0.77, both major league records. From 1998-2000, Rivera pitched 34 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason.
Of course, no one is asking Jones to be Rivera -- he's one of a kind. But if Jones can pitch as effectively as he has the last two seasons, the Tigers will win.
And win big.
"I'm excited about the season," said Jones, who is the franchise leader in saves -- 217 of his 301 have come with the Tigers. "It's the best team on paper I've ever been a part of.
"So I'm hoping to help us win."

| My Todd Jones Story (with deference to Trinita, abridged from the other thread!)
We were shopping in the Millenia Mall in Orlando and, as we were wearing our Tigers gear, a guy came up to us& asked if we were Tiger fans. He showed us a picture on his digital camera of him next to Todd Jones, taken just a few minutes ago! He had been shopping at that mall!
Later that evening at the Astros game, the same gentleman recognized Trinita again...and said that Todd was still in the mall after he took his picture, and he came running back to try & find us....of course we had left that store! RATS! It was a day of near-misses! _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. | | Well I don't think you guys are giving Jones enough credit. He did give us 38 saves last year and 66 in the past 2 years. So what if he has a few off games now and again? I dont see anybody blaming Maggs for not hitting a homer every game, so why get on Jones about not getting saves every time he hits the mound. I'm not gonna lie, Todd Jones is the only reason I began liking the Tigers. |

| | Actually Jones thinks he worked out the glitches he had earlier. He is working on new pitches and is just getting command of them. Should make him that much better this year. |
