Packers doubt Favre's desire
McCarthy believes quarterback, who leaves Lambeau Field, isn't in proper mindset to play.
Detroit News wire services

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The bond between quarterback Brett Favre and the Packers appears to be broken beyond repair.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday night after approximately six hours of what he called "brutally honest" conversations with Favre over the past two days, the three-time MVP just isn't in the right mind-set to be part of the team.

Even with the chance to win his starting job back potentially on the table, McCarthy said Favre couldn't seem to get past emotions as tensions mounted.

"The football team's moving forward," McCarthy said. "The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want. He needs to jump on the train and let's go. Or, if we can't get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving."

McCarthy said he and Favre made plans to speak later Tuesday, but McCarthy didn't seem to allow for the possibility that anything significant would change.

A trade could be coming next, with Tampa Bay re-emerging as a potential destination after seemingly being eliminated from consideration in recent weeks. McCarthy wouldn't address trade talks but did say a quick resolution to the situation is important to the rest of his players.

"Absolutely," McCarthy said. "The players, they want it resolved. Even talk to Brett about it -- he feels bad about it. It's time for them to talk about somebody else."

Favre left Lambeau Field just before practice, taking a right turn out of the stadium's back gate and heading away from the field where the rest of his teammates were assembling for drills.

Favre emerged from the stadium's loading dock exit at 2:34 p.m. EDT, hugging Packers senior security advisor Jerry Parins before driving away.

"We're at a stalemate," Favre told ESPN on Tuesday morning. "Mike and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason I'm here is because the commissioner reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. It's simple and complicated, both at the same time."

Favre told ESPN he doesn't have a problem with competing with Rodgers for the starting job, and can "truly understand" why McCarthy would make Rodgers the starter. But Favre also said a competition "probably isn't going to work" and that "the problem is that there's been a lot of damage done and I can't forget it."

Personnel dept.

The Bengals signed linebacker Keith Rivers of Southern California, the club's first-round pick and the ninth choice overall. Terms were not released.

... Pro Bowl kick returner Joshua Cribbs said he wants to restructure the remaining five years of his contract with the Browns.

Cribbs, one of the NFL's premier special-teams players, said his agent has asked the club to redo the extension he signed during the 2006 season.

The deal is worth about $6 million over the next five years. Cribbs took back two kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns last season.

... Lingering symptoms from a concussion have forced rookie linebacker Robert James to be shut down for the season by the Falcons.

... Browns safety Gary Baxter , attempting a comeback from two freak knee injuries, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. Baxter, who suffered two torn patellar tendons on the same play in a 2006 game, sat out all last season while rehabbing. There's no timetable for his return.

... Broncos center Tom Nalen might be out until the season opener as he continues to recover from offseason surgery on his left knee. He's a 15-year veteran.

It's done: Packers trade Favre to Jets
Green Bay will receive one conditional draft pick in exchange for three-time NFL MVP.
Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Brett Favre to the New York Jets, the team announced late Wednesday night. Terms of the trade weren't immediately available.

The Packers had been talking with the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers since deciding earlier this week that the team and the three-time MVP couldn't co-exist. The Packers decided to move forward with Aaron Rodgers as their starter after Favre announced his retirement in March.

"Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state," Green Bay officials said in a statement.

"It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible."

Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson issued a statement early Thursday.

"I am looking forward to seeing Brett Favre in a New York Jets uniform," Johnson said. "He represents a significant addition to this franchise, and reflects our commitment to putting the best possible product on the field. Mike Tannenbaum and his football administration staff did a great job of navigating this complex process. I am excited about welcoming Brett, Deanna and their family to the Jets organization."

The agreement was first reported by Fox Sports on its Web site.

Favre left Green Bay on Wednesday, boarding a private plane that left for Hattiesburg, Miss. at 1:25 p.m. EDT with Deanna and agent James "Bus" Cook. Favre's family home is near Hattiesburg.

In Mississippi, Favre confirmed that he was considering the Jets and Buccaneers.

"We're working on it," Favre told Jackson TV station WJTV. "Hopefully, we can get something resolved. I've been saying that for quite a while now. I don't want to say we're running out of time, but I need to get into a camp somewhere."

Why would he want to go to the Jets? They suck. I hope he sucks. He's right up there with Roger Clemens in my list of losers in sports.
