PostSubject: Horned Melon   Mon Apr 20, 2009 11:46 pm

Continuing my tour of produce people never usually eat.....

Today I tried a horned melon (AKA African Cucumber or Kiwano)

They're related to both melons and cucumbers. They taste like cucumber with a hint of melon. They're pretty bland overall. The thorns on the outside are pretty sharp. The filling is almost like someone took a peeled cucumber and ran it through a blender.

Wikipedia says these are ridiculously expensive (up to $6 a fruit). My aunt bought this one and says it was cheap because the cashier thought it was a pear for some reason.

Unless you can get one of these cheap I wouldn't recommend it. You can get the same experience by peeling a cucumber, throwing it in a blender and adding just a speck of sugar.

But on the plus side you could use it as a weapon as the thorns on there are pretty tough.

They might not taste good, but they sure do look cool.
