I backpacked for 6 weeks...but pretty much made the circle starting and ending in Amsterdam. Would not do that again but was young and crazy back then.....

We didn't make it that far east. I was with my dad so we didn't do anything "crazy". We stayed in motels every night save one - we slept in a sleeper car on a train from Madrid to Lisbon.

We didn't quite complete a circle either. We flew LA-Dublin (NONstop) and circled our way to Lisbon where we flew Lisbon-London Heathrow (3 days after the bombings) and then London to Chicago (O'hare) were we spent a few days visiting family in Iowa. That was pretty miserable as the town we went to (Clinton, IA) is like 30,000 people and we didn't know those people at all. They're my grandaunt and granduncle (not married, they're siblings) whom I'd never met. My dad said he hadn't seen them in OVER fifty years. He hadn't spoken to them either. Why we went there I have no idea.

I did learn what humidity was. That was the first time I'd ever been in a humid AND hot place in the summer. Lisbon was very humid but cool while we were there. Madrid was very hot but dry. Clinton was in the 90s and humid puke

As a final thought for this post London Heathrow is the best airport in the world. I've only been to half a dozen major airports but the two times I flew into and the time I flew out of there I was very impressed. Despite being the busiest airport in the world (I think) those people sure knew what they were doing. Even though we were there just a few days after the bombings they still got us in and out efficiently.

Well they barely count. Just my grandaunt and granduncle. They're both 90+ and I've only met them once.

LOL! That's the only reason we went. My dad and I have a genealogy program on the computer and wanted some info regarding their families. My dad's mom keeps in touch with those two fairly regularly (they were her husband's siblings) and when my dad talked to her about genealogy she suggested we stop by Iowa and visit them.

Especially since there are so many computer programs out there now that simplify the search and keep the data you do find in a much more concise format.
