I've got you beat! I'll play for the league minimum. $380,000 a year (actually for 7 months worth of work) would be rough, but I'd manage Rolling Eyes

380,000 ain't bad for the MLB minimum; Mark "The Bird" made 19,000 dollars in 1976 as a Detroit Tiger! Which was the league minimum in 1976!

I can remember a grad school prof telling me NOT to accept a starting job less than $24 K. (This was in 1984) I'm here to tell you a college education is meaning less and less! It was almost 6 YEARS before I saw that much a year!

In 1976 normal people could make 19,000 a year if they had a good job. Try making 380,000 a year - you need to be a transplant surgeon or a CEO to do that. I mean most doctors don't even make that!

Baseball players, in the majors are paid way outside of the norm. And yet they complain!

More like $200,000! What really sucks for them is they get $200,000 worth of medical school to pay back (plus whatever loans they may have needed as an undergrad) and then they have to do residency for 3-7 years depending on the specialty and that pays $30,000/yr. or so.

Sure, they get filthy rich eventually (CA pays contracted psychiatrists $46,000 a month for their prisons - $22,000/mo. on salary) but they sure have to wait a while.

Maybe it's just me, but baseball players aren't worth 4 times what doctors are (assuming $1MM is the average MLB salary and $250,000 is the average M.D. salary - those are both reasonably close I'm sure).

Most CEO's make more than 380,000 a year. The CEO of WAL- MART Makes like 10 million a year while the average worker makes 13,000 grand a year according to the documentary I was watching on WOW cable on demand rrecently.

And how socialist your country is. We played with it to get out of the Great Depression and the government put price controls on everything. If you violated the price ceiling, you go to jail.... well that was loved by the people, it kept prices down. BUT THEY DON'T TELL YOU THE REST, some people who charged less than than the govt wanted, to help the people, ALSO WENT TO JAIL. Truth, pure market driven economies, like set up by our founders, WILL WORK WELL IF, the Government keeps their fingers out of the market. Supply and demand WILL control prices, if the government and stock market stay out of our lives!!!!! Our gas prices are up because of Idiots playing God with the price of oil, on the futures exchange of the stock market. They bid up the price to make stock market money, and SUPPLY AND DEMAND no longer has control because of this. The oil companies and oil producing nations are laughing their heads off at this stupid system. The Arab nations were trying to keep oil at 28 to $38 per barrel, but our stock market idiots are purposefully pushing up the price to make money for their already rich selves. Take it off the stock market control, and it will come WAY BACK DOWN again. Remember we are having a true tribble down effect (which is correct). Oil goes up, cost of trucking goes up, consumer goods that need trucked go up.......

If it worked outside of the stock market, less use of gas causes oil prices to go down (remember those days??? it did happen), transport prices go down, and ALL OTHER PRICES CAN ADJUST DOWN! It is simple economics 101. I want to know the IDIOT who changed it to consumer driven to stock exchange driven!

Supply and demand, which is NOT SOCIALIST GOVT. DRIVEN will work EVERY TIME if outside forces keep their hands out of the mix!

Sorry for getting me on my soap box, but I did get a management degree and have many classes in business, and simple finance, marketing and economics works great if the govt keeps their fingers out!!!!

And sorry folks, if you bought houses you never had the income to afford, and got tied up in those scammer sub-prime mortgages, the proper way of correction is to move into something you really can afford, (and lots of those foreclosed homes are now going cheap), finance it with a normal fixed rate mortgage, and the market will adjust correctally. We don't need the government to step in and "fix" things. If the banks get hurt, because they scammed people, so be it!

Dodgers not interested in Inge

Dylan Hernandez, L.A. Times: "Contrary to a published report, the Dodgers don't appear to be interested in Brandon Inge of the Detroit Tigers, in part because of the $19.1 million he is owed over the next three seasons."

Nobody's perfect
Even the best teams have holes to fill this spring

Posted: Wednesday March 5, 2008 10:40PM; Updated: Thursday March 6, 2008 11:02AM

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Hope springs eternal, especially in spring. But don't let the usual unabashed -- and often unrealistic -- optimism fool you. There's plenty of reason to worry, even among the contenders and supposed-super teams.

Just about every team in Florida and Arizona has a need, a hole or a blip. That includes even the best teams. Here is a rundown of some contenders and their needs ...

Tigers

Need: Relief.
A foray into their cramped clubhouse can be awe-inspiring, with a lineup of lockers filled with superstars (and I'm not even counting Al Kaline, a frequent visitor). However, every team needs a bullpen, and the Tigers will be fortunate if theirs suffices.

Veteran Todd Jones won't overwhelm anyone, but he will do as the closer. Where's the setup man, though? Matt Mantei's comeback attempt has been derailed by shoulder trouble and Fernando Rodney has his usual arm issues already. This leaves the Tigers hoping for a quicker-than-expected return from Joel Zumaya. That would be great if it happened. First, though, Zumaya should be required to explain how he really hurt himself. Does anyone believe that moving-boxes-before-the-fire story? No

It's going to be difficult to acquire setup help elsewhere since no one wants to give it up. The Mets, who called about outfielder Marcus Thames, probably wouldn't do any better than Jorge Sosa in return. In the meantime, the Tigers might have to hope someone emerges from among Bobby Seay, Yorman Bazardo, Jason Grilli, Zach Minor and Denny Bautista. Good luck there.

Dodgers

Need: Third base.
All indications are that they were ready to make a big push for Alex Rodriguez this winter before A-Rod did his 180 back to the Yankees. Now they are showing interest in a slightly cheaper third-base model, Brandon Inge, who isn't quite as cheap as you might think with $19.1 million and three years remaining on his contract.

The only reason the Tigers could conceivably want Inge around is to replace Ivan Rodriguez when his contract expires after this season. But Inge blew a hole in that idea by suggesting he didn't really want to catch and saying he has trouble hitting when he has to concentrate on catching (not that his .236 average as a third baseman last season was anything great).

The mere suggestion of interest in the high-priced/low-return Inge creates a strong impression that the Dodgers aren't sold on prospect Andy LaRoche or veteran Nomar Garciaparra, or a combination thereof. LaRoche's press clippings have apparently outstripped reality, and judging by Garciaparra's anemic performance last year (.371 slugging), his time could be almost up.
