Willis stays in Florida to work on control
Rough spring required extra preparation for the left-hander, who debuts as a Tiger on Saturday.
Lynn Henning / The Detroit News

Dontrelle Willis, who had a couple rocky outings in his final two Grapefruit League starts, remained in Florida on Sunday for an intrasquad game -- a final tuneup ahead of his first start, which is scheduled for Saturday against the White Sox.

Leyland said he was hoping for a promising report on a left-hander who had serious control issues during the final 10 days of camp.

"There comes a point with anyone when there are concerns about control," Leyland said. "You can feel good, but at some point you've got to see execution and seem them throw strikes."

Willis said after last Wednesday's walks-filled start against the Pirates that he "felt great." Leyland wasn't necessarily reassured, although he emphasized he was not talking only about Willis when he said: "Just 'cause you feel good -- a lot of people feel good."

Willis had an 8.64 ERA in six spring starts.

Around the horn

Left-handed reliever Tim Byrdak cleared waivers after the Tigers released him Wednesday and is free to sign with any team.

Leyland said he hoped Byrdak, 34, would sign a minor league deal with the Tigers, which might enable him to again find his groove.

That also was the hope in the Tigers signing lefty Aaron Fultz , 34, on Saturday. Last season, Fultz was 4-3 with a 2.92 ERA for the Indians. But, like Byrdak, he had a terrible spring (11.88 ERA in seven games) and last week was released.

Leyland took a breather from baseball to attend Sunday's Midwest Regional final. He repeated his three objectives for post-baseball life: attend an NCAA Final Four and a Kentucky Derby, and play golf at Augusta National.

Yep, they said he pitched a Minor League game and had his control back. So they sent him to Detroit.
