RBI, HR leader Brandon Inge: I feel like a different player
BY JOHN LOWE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • April 6, 2008

Brandon Inge leads the Tigers in home runs and RBIs.

This reflects the struggles of other Tigers. It also reflects how hard Inge worked this winter on his hitting.

"I feel like a different player than the last few years," said Inge, who has two homers and four RBIs. "I did well in 2006 (27 homers), but even compared to then, I still feel like a better hitter.

"I did a lot of work in the off-season. I know I'm going to struggle at some point this season -- everyone does. But the one thing I have going is that I'm relaxed because I finally have a base.

"I have some things mechanically I do every time when I go to the plate, whereas before I just kind of stepped in the box and just flew by the seat of my pants and whatever happened, happened. I wished for the best."

When Inge talked about his base, he referred to how in his hitting stance this season he sets his feet about six or seven inches farther apart than before. "That's a lot," Inge said.

Inge was the only Tiger with an extra-base hit Saturday. Of the hitting woes, manager Jim Leyland said: "The guys are going to come out it -- it's just a matter of when. I'd be shocked if they are feeling a lot of pressure. Most of this team was in the World Series two years ago. ...

"I'd be very disappointed if Magglio Ordoñez, the batting champion, and Placido Polanco, who got 200 hits last year, are pressing. I think they might be a little anxious.

"(Carlos) Guillen is swinging pretty well. Pudge (Rodriguez) is swinging the bat decent now -- he had three hits yesterday (Friday) and hit a couple balls well today. Edgar (Renteria) hit a couple of balls well."

But Inge and Clete Thomas -- two Tigers for whom there were no expectations -- have been the team's best hitters so far. "Thomas is just having fun playing, and I think Inge is, too," Leyland said. "They are looking more like it's a game, and some of us are looking more like it's a job."

Leyland said that designated hitter Gary Sheffield could return to the lineup tonight. He has missed the last two games because of a torn tendon at the top of his left ring finger. "He swung today and felt pretty good," Leyland said. If Sheffield is at DH tonight, Miguel Cabrera will play third and Inge center. Marcus Thames will replace lefty-swinging Jacque Jones in left against Chicago left-hander Mark Buehrle.

Jones was the first batter lefty Boone Logan faced in the seventh Saturday. Leyland said he didn't hit the right-handed Thames for Jones then "because it was a one-run game, and I know Jenks is going to be in the game if it stays that way."

Jones fanned against Logan, but got a single against right-handed closer Bobby Jenks in the ninth.

With Francis Beltran aboard as the 13th pitcher, the Tigers have only three hitters on the bench each game instead of four. Leyland said the short bench will keep him from making some substitutions.
