Cat-atonic: Six-game skid is Tigers' longest since Sept. '05
BY JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • April 7, 2008

There was no tirade this time, no public display of ire, no high-decibel outburst that echoed against the walls of the home clubhouse at Comerica Park.

Yes, Tigers manager Jim Leyland spoke with his players after Sunday's defeat, an unsightly 13-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

He had watched his players take a "lethargic approach" during this shocking, stumbling start. He sensed that his team, with 11 previous All-Stars, is "just coming to work right now."

And he let them know.

"I talked," Leyland said. "I didn't yell."

He certainly could have. A crowd of 35,230, along with a national television audience, watched as Detroit dropped to 0-6 for the first time since 2003.

That year, the Tigers started 0-9 and lost 119 games.

"I wasn't going to go in there and rant and rave and have a nice little article in the paper like we did when we played Cleveland a couple years ago," Leyland said.

"This team is not a team of guys that have done it one time. This is a team that has a track record. To be honest, you expect a little bit more when you have a track record like most of our guys do. That's the thing that's disappointing."

Leyland said that he doesn't feel a sense of "cohesiveness, even during batting practice."

"When you manage a long time, you smell that stuff," Leyland said. "You watch, and you can tell that's not quite right yet."

Justin Verlander surrendered four earned runs and was gone before the end of the sixth inning. He was also charged with five unearned runs, following a Carlos Guillen error at first base.

"I think everybody needs to do a little soul-searching, come out, and remember what it's like to play and have fun," said Verlander, who is now 0-1 with a 6.17 ERA. "I couldn't place a finger on it right now, what it is. I think if we just act like we're having fun, and play the game like we used to, that's when things will turn around."

The Tigers, who some expected to score 1,000 runs this year, instead entered Sunday's game with a league-low 13. And that total barely increased against left-hander Mark Buehrle. A Joe Crede throwing error helped them score one run in the third, and they didn't score again until the seventh, when a wild pitch hit home plate umpire Jeff Kellogg in the head.

Miguel Cabrera, the present and future franchise cornerstone, went 0-for-4. He broke his bat on a second-inning pop-out, broke his bat on a fourth-inning double play, and grounded into another double play to end the sixth.

Then he popped out -- on the first pitch -- in the ninth inning, as his average dropped to .111.

Before the game, Leyland talked about how Detroit's lineup should be able to wear pitchers down. On Sunday, though, the Tigers continued to make outs early in the count. Edgar Renteria, who doesn't have an extra-base hit this year, stranded a runner with a first-pitch, inning-ending groundout in the fourth.

The Tigers have lost six consecutive games only once before in Leyland's tenure here. That was in 2006, near the end of a magical year, when they ended the regular season with five straight defeats and lost Game 1 of the AL Division Series.

After that, of course, they won seven consecutive postseason games, culminating in a World Series berth.
