How the Tigers finally won
FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES April 10, 2008

Highlights of the Tigers' 7-2 win over the Red Sox, Detroit's first victory of the season:

First seven games: 15 runs scored by the Tigers.

Wednesday: Seven.

Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen homered, Edgar Renteria had three hits as the Tigers drew eight walks and struck out just twice. The Tigers had 25 walks to 46 Ks in their first seven games.

The win ended their worst losing streak to start the season since 2003, when Detroit lost its first nine games and finished at 43-119.

The Tigers were just 1-for-25 with runners in scoring position with less than two outs this season before teeing off on Jon Lester (1-2) with four runs in the fourth after trailing 2-0.

Despite a five-run lead, Todd Jones still gave Tigers fans a rollercoaster ride. The Red Sox loaded the bases in the ninth before Jones retired Kevin Youkilis on a popup for the final out.

In the eighth, Pudge Rodriguez became the 87th player with 2,500 hits when he broke an 0-for-15 slump with a single. "There's still a lot of baseball left for me," he said. "2,500 hits is remarkable and I'm very happy for that."

Still, no team has made the postseason after an 0-7 start. The longest winless streak at the start of a season by a team that went on to make the postseason was six games by the 1974 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1995 Cincinnati Reds

Brandon Inge, the Tigers' ninth batter, has six of their 20 RBIs.

The Tigers entered the game hitting .234 (55-for-235). They went 10-for-35 (.286) on Wednesday.
