Pain, gain: Bullpen amazing, gets 27 outs after Willis injury
BY JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • April 12, 2008

CHICAGO -- Jim Leyland couldn't remember a game like it. Neither could Todd Jones.

When Dontrelle Willis left Friday's start with a hyperextended right knee, there were two on with no outs in the first inning. In order for the Tigers to win, their maligned bullpen would need to record 27 outs.

Aquilino Lopez took care of the first 12. Jason Grilli, tiptoeing on the edge of the roster, retired nine without allowing a run.

Denny Bautista pitched a scoreless eighth, Jones earned his first save of the season with a perfect ninth, and the Tigers had a cathartic, hard-earned 5-2 victory over the White Sox before 26,094 at U.S. Cellular Field.

"Tremendous, tremendous effort," Leyland said. "I know it's just one win, but that's why you don't get all excited when times are tough.

"We got in at 3, 4 o'clock in the morning (from Boston), terrible weather -- to come out and give an effort like that. That's exactly why you have to make sure you always respect your team.

"That can put to rest anybody that thinks this club doesn't bust their (butts) every day, because they do. I'm awful proud of them."

After starting 0-7, the Tigers are 2-8. That's the record the Philadelphia Phillies had after 10 games last season before winning the National League East.

When told that, Jones replied, "We're a better team this year than the Phillies were last year."

Four Detroit relievers combined to allow one earned run over nine innings. They allowed four hits and two walks.

"Goes to show that our bullpen can pitch sometimes," said a sarcastic Jones. "It's important for everybody to get out there and do their job. We've been taking some heat early.

"Maybe this'll buy us a 24-hour stay of execution."

As satisfying as the victory may have been, team officials still had cause to be concerned about Willis, who has never missed a start in the majors. That is an important distinction to him, one that has grown in significance over time. But the streak might be over.

Even before leaving, an erratic performance did nothing to support Willis' repeated statements that his left arm is sound.

He walked leadoff hitter Carlos Quentin on five pitches. Then he slipped while delivering his first pitch to the next hitter, Orlando Cabrera. That brought head athletic trainer Kevin Rand to the mound.

The two spoke briefly. Willis remained in the game -- but not for long.

Willis walked Cabrera on a full count. Then his third pitch to Jim Thome, a slider, careened wide of Pudge Rodriguez for a wild pitch.

Rand and Leyland came back to the mound. Willis appeared to say that he wanted to stay in the game, but the discussion was brief. Leyland called to the bullpen for Lopez, who wasn't even warming up.

Willis' night was over after 14 pitches -- and four strikes.

Quentin scored on Paul Konerko's sacrifice fly, and Willis was charged with the earned run.

On Friday, though, the bullpen was there to make the 27-out save.
