It's not over; bad start doesn't mean Tigers won't be in World Series
April 13, 2008

I don't know if the Tigers will make the playoffs. But I have a hard time believing they are a bad team -- mediocre, maybe, but not truly bad. And it still would not surprise me to see them win the World Series.

It is worth noting that last year, the New York Yankees were 21-29 in late May and they ended up winning 94 games and making the playoffs. The 2003 Marlins started 19-29 and won the World Series.

I know, I know -- no team has ever started 0-7 and won the World Series. So what? A more relevant stat would be how many teams lost seven straight at any point in the season and won the World Series. It's not like the first seven are truly more important. They just seem more important because they are all we have to judge.

We have heard a lot about how a good team should never lose seven straight games. It sounds right. It isn't.

Last year's Yankees lost seven straight in April and won those 94 games. The 2006 Tigers had two five-game losing streaks and two four-game losing streaks and still made the World Series.

The 2006 Cardinals -- World Series champs -- lost eight straight in late June, eight straight again that summer and seven straight in September. Those Cardinals actually aren't the best example -- they sneaked into the playoffs with 83 wins, then got hot. Eighty-three wins won't get the Tigers into the playoffs in this year's American League.

The 2005 White Sox lost seven straight in August. They won 99 regular-season games and the World Series.

So, everybody, please calm down.

The Tigers opened with some bad baseball. That does not mean they are a bad team.

In my opinion, Polanco (back), Cabrera (lef) and Sheffield (finger) should all go on the DL. I'm not using their injuries as an excuse, but none of these players are doing any good playing right now. It's clear that they cannot play at less than 100% (shame on our trainers) and we need players that can perform even if it's just minor leaguers.

GO CLETE!
They had a great Tigers Weekly spot on him! That little kid that's wandering around with him is his half-brother! His whole family was here that first week. They are mighty proud of him!

I agree with you bobrob; They need time to heal. If it means they miss 10 games to get 100 percent, so be it.

None of these guys are going to get better by stayng in the lineup! Just watch Cabrera, he is not able to run to first base, yet alone play 3b worth a damn. Sheff has no feeling in his finger, we are back to the slump he had playing injured, last year. Polanco is making errors like mad. At least Carlos is not playing.
