What's that stench? Tigers emitting the odor of desperation
BY MICHAEL ROSENBERG • FREE PRESS COLUMNIST • May 6, 2008

It is customary, after announcing something to the press, to ask if anybody has any questions. But after Dave Dombrowski explained his latest roster moves, I really thought he would ask if we had any answers.

On Monday at Comerica Park, Daisuke Matsuzaka confounded the Tigers, which was almost rude; the Tigers can confound themselves just fine, thank you very much. Through three innings Matsuzaka was on pace for the never-seen 210-pitch no-hitter.

While the Red Sox rolled out Dice-K, the Tigers just rolled the dice. They dumped their non-hitting leftfielder, Jacque Jones, to help save their non-hitting designated hitter, Gary Sheffield.

"We're just trying this to see if it works," manager Jim Leyland said.

This is what has happened to the Tigers in one excruciating 33-game stretch. They began the season amid talk of 1,000 runs and 100 wins. Now they must do more painful math. The Tigers owe Jones $3 million for his month of work. That is $600,000 per RBI.

Dombrowski said Jones "hasn't swung the bat like we had hoped." Dombrowski didn't say it, but my suspicion is that they hoped he would swing the bat at the ball. Jones was hitting .165 with 18 strikeouts and 13 hits.

Yet Jones has been a bargain compared to Sheffield, who is making $14 million and is hitting .183.

The Tigers seem an awful lot like a movie about angst-ridden 30-somethings. Sheffield was supposed to be the DH, but that made him "feel like I was isolated." He really wants to be a leftfielder.

Brandon Inge hopes you still think of him as your third baseman ... but then, so does Miguel Cabrera, who is still getting used to his new city, and meanwhile the man who replaced both of them at third, Carlos Guillen, wouldn't mind being a young shortstop again, and someday they all hope to start a rock and roll band. (On guitar: Joel Zumaya!)

The Tigers fell to 14-19 with their loss, but the record is not their biggest concern. This year's American League Central is the Dead Sea of baseball -- anybody can stay afloat, even a 14-19 team. They are absolutely, unequivocally, not out of it.

The big concern is that they suddenly look like they have too many old players, too many one-dimensional players and too may high-profile busts. Since the 2006 World Series, Dombrowski has acquired five key players: Sheffield, Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis, Jones and Edgar Renteria.

So far, only Renteria has met expectations. And even that trade looks like a mistake because the Tigers gave up Jair Jurrjens, who has a 3.05 earned-run average for the Braves.

Cabrera should be fine; most major leaguers would give up free agency to be in his kind of slump. But the Tigers have committed $29 million to Willis, who needs Google maps just to find the plate.

And the Tigers are facing the very real possibility that Sheffield, one of the great players of his era, is finished. His request to play leftfield is ironic, for playing the outfield is what sent him into this tailspin.

Last July 21, while playing rightfield, Sheffield collided with Placido Polanco. In 232 at-bats since, Sheff has hit .180 with four home runs.

Now Sheffield thinks it's all in his head. The evidence indicates that it's all in his shoulder. And even if Sheffield is right, and playing leftfield awakens his bat, what happens if his shoulder gets injured again?

"If it does, then it's time to go home," Sheffield said. "Simple as that."

It is actually not quite as simple as that. Sheffield is getting paid $14 million this season and next, and he is not going to walk away from that kind of cash.

The Tigers must hope that Sheffield is right -- about his head, his shoulder and his bat. And that Willis and the rest of the starters find their groove. And that Cabrera gets really, really hot. These Tigers are not hopeless, but they are relying too much on hope for anybody's tastes.

Get a flame under your butts boys and live up to the outrageous pay you are getting (notice I did not use "earning", the are not playing well enough to say they "earned it!") rant
