Were Tigers' trades worth it?
Tigers gave up talent to get veterans and win now
Lynn Henning / The Detroit News

They were expensive acquisitions, Gary Sheffield, Edgar Renteria, Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis.

The Tigers parted with eight young pitchers, two prized outfield prospects and a catcher in bringing to Detroit three glitzy veterans being asked to put a contending team into the postseason.

Three trades that were almost universally praised at the time they were made have led to some second thoughts on the part of Tigers fans and media -- and just maybe the Tigers' front office.

Sometimes a little humor helps put things in perspective. Ned Rice, a Los Angeles-based television writer born in Detroit, grew up in Livonia, and graduated from the University of Michigan, wrote in a clever e-mail last week:

"I guess it's official now: Jair Jurrjens is Dutch for 'John Smoltz.' "

Jurrjens was one-half of the package the Tigers handed to Atlanta last October in the trade for Renteria, the shortstop the Tigers believed was essential if Detroit was to be a playoff team in 2008. Smoltz is a Hall of Fame-bound right-hander for Atlanta who was a Tigers pitching prospect in August of 1987 when he was dealt to the Braves for a long-in-the-tooth right-hander, Doyle Alexander, who helped the Tigers squeak into the '87 playoffs.

Jurrjens, 22, has been one of the best right-handers in the National League in 2008. He is 8-3 with a 2.94 ERA for the Braves. He has pitched deep into games and has held opposing hitters to a .246 average.

And he was not the only player with heavy potential the Tigers have sent away. Here's how the rest of the ex-Tigers cast is faring at midseason:

    Other ex-Tigers:
  • Humberto Sanchez, Yankees: A 6-foot-6, 270-pound
starting pitcher with a mid-90s fastball was the key reason New York
made its 2006 trade for Sheffield. Sanchez has missed the past two
seasons because of Tommy John surgery. He just turned 25 and could yet
become a powerhouse pitcher if his recovery follows the path of most
players who have had the surgery.
  • Kevin Whelan, Yankees:
Whelan was a hard-throwing, back-end bullpen prospect when the Tigers
included their fourth-round draft pick from the 2005 draft. Whelan
started the year at the Yankees' high Class A stop but has since moved
to Double-A Trenton. For the year he is 2-0 in 11 games with a 4.66
ERA. He has 21 strikeouts and 16 walks in 19 innings.
  • Anthony Claggett, Yankees: He has pitched in 16 games at Double-A Trenton, all in relief, and has sparkled: 1-0, 1.13 ERA.
  • Andrew Miller, Marlins:
He and Cameron Maybin were the big names among the six players the
Tigers shipped to Florida for Cabrera and Willis. Miller has been
so-so, but not disappointingly so, two years after the Tigers drafted
him out of the University of North Carolina. He is 5-7 for the Marlins
with a 5.05 ERA. His upside is where it was a year ago: extremely high.
  • Cameron Maybin, Marlins: For an outfielder who is
only 21, Maybin has been progressing fairly smoothly at Double-A
Carolina: .266 in 77 games with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, 12 doubles and
six triples. He has not come on as quickly as the Tigers -- and now the
Marlins -- had hoped, but with Maybin, time and talent are on his side.
  • Dallas Trahern, Marlins: He has had 11 starts at
Triple-A Albuquerque with unimpressive numbers to date: 3-6 record,
6.67 ERA. Trahern is a sinker-ball artist who has given up too many
    hits: 76 in 63 innings.
  • Eulogio De La Cruz, Marlins:
He was recalled last week by the Marlins from Triple-A Albuquerque,
    where the 24-year-old right-hander was solid: 7-3, 3.91 ERA.
  • Burke Badenhop, Marlins:
He was never considered a front-line pitching prospect for the Tigers,
which was why it was a bit surprising that the Marlins made him a quick
addition to their 2008 staff. In 13 games, eight of them starts,
    Badenhop is 2-3 with a 6.08 ERA.
  • Mike Rabelo, Marlins:
He was a Tigers backup catcher a year ago and was playing
semi-regularly for the Marlins before being sent to Triple-A last
month. Rabelo in 34 games batted .202 with three home runs and 10 RBIs.

Well none of the guys we gave up have been overly-spectacular so far other than Jurrjens. Way too soon to judge the trades though.

I agree. But I really am still wondering about Miggy. I think he has more physical problems than we knew about, plus he sure has no get up and go. They said his production was because of American League pitchers..... well we just got through a bunch of NL games, and there was not much more power shown there either. Where were the home runs expected?

As for the power, he has what, 10? He's only a 30 HR type guy so he's only about 5 shy of that pace. His problem is he's not doubling and singling enough either. He's generally like a .320/30HR/120RBI type-guy and he's on pace to fail in all 3 of those categories. Still, he's only 25 and he started the year hurt and now he's hurt again. Generally he's not hurt (he averages well over 150 games a year) so maybe it's just an off-year combined with some minor injuries. Who knows.

I sure hope so. I also hope Willis can get his mechanics straightened out. He is such a positive person, with great talent! He just needs some of the extra funk removed from his funky pitching style!

I'm much less optimistic about Willis than Cabrera.

Me too. Miggy will hit. No question about that. But Willis is a mess. Don't know what the problem is. But this guy is a mess at the moment. He's in a deep deep hole.

Looks to me like Willis isn't following through with his delivery.
Notice how many pitchers "tuck" their glove right before delivery. Watch where Willis' glove is right before delivery....it's all over the place.

Different every time!!

Give me 20 minutes with him.....
