Tigers agree to terms with Miner, Seay and Laird

The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a contract for the 2010 season with righthanded pitcher Zach Miner, lefthanded pitcher Bobby Seay and catcher Gerald Laird. The club avoided arbitration with all three players.

Miner spent the entire 2009 season with the Tigers, appearing in a career-best 51 games. He finished 7-5 with a 4.29 ERA (92.1IP/44ER) and 62 strikeouts in his 51 outings (five starts) with the Tigers last season.

Seay posted a 6-3 record and 4.25 ERA (48.2IP/23ER) in 67 appearances for the Tigers during the 2009 season. He established career highs with six wins, 67 appearances and 48.2 innings pitched last season. Seay tied for eighth among all American League relievers with six wins.

Laird saw action in a career-high 135 games for the Tigers in 2009, batting .225 (93x413) with 23 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 33 RBI. He led all American League catchers with a .997 fielding percentage and 78 assists last season. Laird threw out 40.4 percent of runners attempting to steal (40x99), tops among all league catchers in 2009.

With three players agreeing to terms today, the Tigers now have 18 players on the club's 40-man roster under contract for the 2010 season.

Tigers agree to terms with Jose Valverde

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms with righthanded pitcher Jose Valverde on a two-year contact with a club option for the 2012 season.

Valverde compiled a 4-2 record, 2.33 ERA (54.0IP/14ER) and 25 saves in 52 outings for the Houston Astros during the 2009 season. He fanned 56 batters during the season, while he limited opponents to a .207 batting average (40x193).

"We are pleased to add a premier closer like Jose Valverde to our club," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "His addition fills what we felt was our biggest need and he solidifies the back end of our bullpen to strengthen our pitching staff."

In seven seasons at the major league level with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2003-07) and Astros (2008-09), Valverde has posted a 19-19 record, 3.17 ERA (386.0IP/136ER) and 167 saves in 379 career outings. He has struck out 470 batters over his career, while limiting opponents to a .208 batting average (296x1424).

Valverde is second among all National League pitchers with 116 saves since the start of the 2007 season, trailing only Francisco Cordero's 117 saves. Valverde was selected to the National League's all-star squad in 2007.

Additionally, the Tigers today announced the club has received cash considerations from the San Diego Padres to complete the Dusty Ryan trade on December 21, 2009.

Comerica Bank swings into spring with $10,000 Grand Slam Grant to benefit metro Detroit high school baseball program

DETROIT - With baseball season right around the corner, Comerica Bank is searching for a team of deserving high school all-stars whose baseball or softball program could use a little changeup. The bank is offering a $10,000 Grand Slam Grant to create, expand or improve a high school baseball or softball program in metro Detroit.

In addition to the grant, the selected school will also receive 100 pavilion tickets, 20 outfield box tickets and 18 suite tickets to the Detroit Tigers opening weekend game on April 9, 2011. The grant recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the game, and a school representative will have the opportunity to throw out the first pitch.

Public high schools in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lenawee and Washtenaw counties are eligible to apply for the Grand Slam Grant. The funds could be used for field improvements, equipment, training camps, or other baseball or softballrelated expenses.

"The Grand Slam Grant is meant to encourage physical activity and foster athletic excellence in the metro Detroit communities Comerica serves," said Thomas D. Ogden, president, Comerica Bank-Michigan. "With so many schools cutting baseball and softball budgets, we felt this was a way to ensure deserving kids have the tools they need to enjoy America's favorite pastime the way it was meant to be played."

Applications are available for download at www.Comerica.com/GrandSlamGrant. Completed applications, including supporting images if desired, must be emailed to grandslamgrant@comerica.com by no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 24. Winners will be notified by April 5 and recognized at Comerica Park on April 9.

Grant applications will be reviewed for a variety of factors including overall need, creativity, and school and community impact. The grant recipient will be selected by the Comerica Bank Grand Slam Grant Selection Committee, consisting of representatives from Comerica Bank and the Detroit Tigers. The selected school must agree to attend the check presentation at Comerica Park on April 9, 2011, where the grant recipient will be announced to the public.

Comerica Bank, with 217 banking centers in Michigan, is a subsidiary of Comerica Incorporated. Comerica is making a $17 million investment in Detroit with the renovation of its building at 411 W. Lafayette, which will be renamed Comerica Bank Center and become the bank's Michigan Market headquarters in 2012. Comerica Incorporated (NYSE: CMA) is a financial services company strategically aligned by three business segments: The Business Bank, The Retail Bank, and Wealth & Institutional Management. Comerica focuses on relationships, and helping people and businesses be successful. To receive e-mail alerts of breaking Comerica news, go to http://www.comerica.com/newsalerts.

Chris Cron returns as Double A Erie Manager
Jaime Garcia, Gerald Perry Join SeaWolves Staff

The Detroit Tigers today announced Chris Cron will return in 2013 to serve as the manager at Double A Erie. Jaime Garcia and Gerald Perry have joined the Tigers organization as the pitching coach and hitting coach, respectively, at Erie.

The 2013 season will mark Cron’s third season with the Tigers organization as the manager at Erie. Prior to joining the Tigers organization in 2011, he managed for 16 seasons at the minor league level with the Chicago White Sox (1995-99, 2003-10) and Colorado Rockies (2000-02).

Prior to joining the Tigers organization, Garcia spent six seasons with the Houston Astros organization. He spent his first four seasons (2007-10) with the Astros as the organization’s assistant pitching coordinator, before serving as the minor league pitching coordinator in 2011 and the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Astros and the Latin Pitching Supervisor in 2012.

Garcia’s professional coaching career began with the Chicago White Sox organization in 1988. After spending nine seasons with the White Sox organization (1988-96), Garcia has coached with the Milwaukee Brewers (1997), Texas Rangers (1998-99), Kansas City Royals (2000-02) and Cincinnati Reds (2003-06) organizations.

Perry joins the Tigers organization after serving as the hitting coach with Triple A Pawtucket in the Boston Red Sox organization during the 2012 season. He has served as a hitting coach at the major league level with the Seattle Mariners (2000-02), Pittsburgh Pirates (2003-05), Oakland Athletics (2006, 2011) and Chicago Cubs (2007-June of 2009). Perry’s coaching career began in 1997 as he served as the hitting coach at Single A Michigan in the Red Sox organization. He spent both the 1998 and 2010 seasons as the hitting coach at Pawtucket, while he served as Boston’s minor league hitting coordinator in 1999.

Selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the June 1978 draft, Perry played 13 seasons at the major league level with the Braves (1983-89), Kansas City Royals (1990) and St. Louis Cardinals (1991-95). He was selected to the National League’s all-star squad during the 1988 season.

Chris McDonald will return to Erie for his eighth season as the club’s athletic trainer, his 13th season with the Tigers organization. Fred Murphy will serve as the strength and conditioning coordinator with the SeaWolves during the 2013 season.
