Tigers' Hispanic players popular among fans
Britt Braudo / The Detroit News

Thirty years ago, there was only one.

The Tigers roster has changed countless times since. Slowly, the team's ethnic makeup has changed, too. In 1978, the Tigers roster featured only one Hispanic player, Aurelio Rodriguez. By 1988, there were three and in 1998 seven.

Ten players on the Tigers active roster are Hispanic and are among the most popular players with fans.

In 2005, Major League Baseball's list of the 15 most popular jerseys featured five Hispanic players: Carlos Beltran, Vladimir Guerrero, Pedro Martinez, Albert Pujols and Pudge Rodriguez.

At the team store in Comerica Park, staff said they can't keep Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera merchandise in stock. Detroit Athletic Co., in the shadow of Tiger Stadium, said Ordonez and Cabrera are their biggest sellers, too.

"What drives people into buying merchandise is the affiliation and association with the team and being a fan of a player," said Michael Johnson, Director of Marketing for Majestic Athletic, the official outfitter of the MLB.

These days, fans are responding by supporting players not based on ethnicity, rather their performance on the field.

"If they can play, they should be playing here and they're a part of our team," said Chris Beyer, 19, of Sterling Heights. "I don't really think it (race) matters anymore. It's not a problem here."

Tony Ruvolo, 18, of Sterling Heights said with the state of the economy in Michigan, people aren't looking to segregate themselves or their teams.

"We're a working-class city and we work together," Ruvolo said. "Anything that brings people together is good for the city, especially for sports."

Ron Colangelo, Vice President of Communications for the Tigers, said the organization offers fans many options when it comes to supporting their favorite players. He said the top five selling jerseys are Ordonez, Cabrera, Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco and Justin Verlander.

"Our sales reflect a diverse purchasing trend," Colangelo said. "Three of the five are Hispanic players, which says a lot. For T-shirts, it's the same, with three of the five."

Denise Young, manager of Fanatic U, a sports souvenir shop in Garden City, said player popularity often depends on how the team is doing.

"The fans are funny, if they lost one game, they all stop shopping, and they turn around and win one and they're back in the store," Young said.

At Fanatic U, Cabrera is a fan favorite these days, and Carlos Guillen merchandise has been selling well since he was selected for the All-Star Game.

Does he really count as being Dominican? I mean he was born in the United States, has lived all but 3 years of his life in the United States, and competed for the United States in the World Baseball Classic.
