Marketing Update

We are meeting with our ad agency today to finalize the TV and print campaign for 2009. As you've probably noticed, "Who's Your Tiger?" has disappeared from the background of our website. The new slogan, is not a "stand-alone" slogan or question. It's more of a statement--about the history and relationship the Tigers have with the City of Detroit. We will be very curious to see what the reaction will be. The first TV spot will debut in January. The season ticket book design is almost finalized too. Those of you who understand the significance of 2009 and collect baseball cards will know where we got the inspiration for this year's tickets.

Season Ticket Renewal

It's that time of year again--the Season Ticket Renewals are hitting doorsteps as we speak.

There are a few adjustments that have been discussed and season ticketholders will not be affected by the premium pricing dates.

TigerFest is coming!

Just when you start thinking that winter will never end comes a reminder that Spring Training is only 10 short weeks away: TigerFest 2009 tickets go on sale Friday at 10AM! (At tigers.com OR by calling 866-66-TIGER)

This year's event will have a few new things like a line just for kids to get autographs from their favorite players and all of the old favorites--photo area, fan Q&A sessions with players, Tigers clubhouse and front office tours and of course autographs! The number of tickets are limited, so be sure to get yours early! (TigerFest has sold out the last two years) Prices are exactly the same as last year, too!

Be sure to wear your Tigers gear--our photographer will be roaming TigerFest looking for photos to post in our annual TigerFest photo gallery!

Cowbell??

Our Park Operations department has been lobbying to have us encourage our fans to bring cowbells to Comerica Park. Members of our Marketing Department think that since the Tampa Bay Rays used cowbells last year (and the Cleveland Indians during the Albert Belle years) that "More Cowbell" would not be good. Tigers fans--what do you think?

Radio Affiliates & Cowbells

We just received the list of radio stations that will be carrying Tigers baseball in 2009. You can access the list here.

The response of fans to the "Cowbell" idea on this blog and in other areas has been pretty much one-sided. Therefore, no cowbells will be allowed inside Comerica Park in 2009.

A post from PAWS!

It seems winter has flown by! The players report to Spring Training in a matter of days and I anticipate a successful team for the 2009 season. Opening Day is only a few months away and I was just thinking about what a busy winter it has been...

During Thanksgiving I visited with the families at the Ronald McDonald House - Detroit. I arrived just in time to be wrapped up in an apron to help the volunteers cook a spaghetti dinner. It's a good thing we ALL ate the garlic rolls because I know my breath was stinky!!

I also teamed up with Magic 105.1FM for the Toys for Tots collection around the Metro Detroit Area. I had to be bright eyed and bushy tailed to be up early to hang out with Jim Harper and his morning crew. We shared some laughs, and I met local boy scouts that helped collect toys too. I also had breakfast with the guests and made sure to drink plenty of orange juice and stay away from those donuts. (OK, maybe I ate one) I couldn't resist the sprinkles!

2009 PAWS Holiday Photos 013.jpgAnd even in tough economic times, people still came out to give to the Salvation Army Red Kettle Fund. Roberta Jasina and Joe Donovan of WWJ AM950 joined me in Southfield to ring the famous bell and I enjoyed conducting the Salvation Army Band. It was definitely fun to stop shoppers and get my groove on! The more I danced and entertained, the more people laughed which meant more contributions. I wish you could have seen Joe's fur hat, I worry that it could be a long lost family member! Ouch!

I also made my first trip to Ida, MI where I enjoyed the Parade of Lights and sat with our announcer Bob Vergiels, the Grand Marshall, for the parade. People lined the streets and I even enjoyed an elephant ear afterward, which turned out to be a sugarfest!!

The Tigers Winter Caravan was a great chance to meet and greet with my favorite Tigers fans! I had a great time at Borders in Novi with Nate Robertson and Zach Miner. They read the "ABC's of Detroit Tigers Baseball" to a small group of young fans. I found some good books in the children's section too. My favorites are about tigers and cats because I like reading about my family. Wouldn't you? At DTE headquarters I teamed up with Louie the Lightning Bug and we worked together to pump up the crowd for the player entrances. What a great group of Tigers supporters we have!

The end of the Winter Caravan led into our fans favorite winter event, Tigerfest. It was bitterly cold but I found a warm place in the tents to thaw out my tail. Posing for pictures and autographs are two of my favorite things to do, so I was in heaven all day! The support from our fans is what makes my job so much fun!! See you at Comerica Park in April!!

Media Guides 1961-1982

This past winter we went through our archives and found a treasure trove of Media Guides from 1961 through 2008. In between designing our collateral materials and planning things like TigerFest and the Winter Caravan, we scanned 21 seasons of media guides. The guides are now available in the Fan Forum on tigers.com for your viewing pleasure. Let us know what you think! More guides will be added periodically throughout the season.

* Posted on February 10, 2009 at 3:14 PM

*NOTE: As of this posting, guides for 1961-1982 were found at this link. I am sure the Tigers will be adding the others as time goes on...

PS- I love 1968 and 69's covers!

We're less than two weeks away from Opening Day and plans are in full swing! Inside the stadium, what was Montgomery Inn is being transformed into a sports bar called "The Jungle". The Brushfire Grill is being transformed into the FOX Sports Detroit Brushfire Grill where the pre-and postgame shows will be broadcast from. The kids will be thrilled to know that Radio Disney 910AM will be back in Comerica Park for every Sunday Kids Day this year. Speaking of Sundays, "Pack Attack" will also be played every Sunday at the ballpark and the grand prize for April 12th? A Placido Polanco game-used bat!

Star Wars characters from The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) will be at the game.

89X and the Luna Dancers will return for the second straight year. Start practicing the "Thriller" dance and working on your costume!

Jack Morris Replica Jersey T-Shirt: In honor of the 25th Anniversary of Jack Morris' no-hitter in 1984, the first 7,500 fans will receive a replica jersey t-shirt featuring the Olde English D on front and Jack Morris' famous #47 on back. Sponsored by Belle Tire, this is sure to be a fan favorite!

There is also news about another special event: The logo for the giveaway item for ˇFiesta Tigres! has been designed. You can see it here first:

The Season Tickets

Ron Wade (Director of Marketing) has adamantly protected the secrecy of the design of the 2009 season tickets until now. With the final batch of "photo" tickets safely in the hands of lucky Tigers fans, he has given approval to reveal the design and points out a few things:

"Working on the season tickets is the favorite part of my job. With 2009 being the 25th Anniversary of the 1984 World Series Champions, we knew as early as last April that we wanted to use the 1984 Topps baseball card design for our tickets. As we worked on the new slogan, Always A Tiger, we realized the season tickets would be a beautiful extension of the campaign--a link between to the past with our current stars.
Even though we used an old design, we made some additions:

  • MLB Initiatives are called out on the appropriate game tickets--Jackie Robinson Day, Prostate Cancer Awareness, Roberto Clemente Day and the 9/11 Remembrance.
  • Detroit Tigers "Special Events" are called out-- Fiesta Tigres! and Negro Leagues Weekend

When I was a season ticketholder, the day I got my tickets was always special. I hope this year, the season ticketholders are happy and got a little thrill when they opened up their envelopes. "
