Tigers ready for Winter Caravan
Regional tour will finish at TigerFest on Jan. 24 at Comerica Park

By Jason Beck / MLB.com

DETROIT -- Though winter has its cold claws clutched around Michigan and Northwest Ohio, the Tigers will get fans looking ahead to spring next week, when they embark on their annual Winter Caravan.

This year's tour of the region will cover more than 20 stops over three days and two bus tours, including banquets at two Tigers Minor League affiliates, as players and coaches hit the road ahead of TigerFest on Jan. 24 at Comerica Park. Several events will be open to the public.

Manager Jim Leyland and at least 10 players are on the tentative list to appear in the Toledo, Ohio, area on Wednesday, Jan. 21 as the Mud Hens host their Fandemonium dinner at The Pinnacle in Maumee, Ohio. Tickets are still on sale for the dinner, with proceeds to benefit the Monsignor Jerome E. Schmit Youth Endowment Fund as well as the Helping Hens Charitable Fund to benefit children in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

Players slated to appear include outfielders Marcus Thames, Ryan Raburn, Clete Thomas and Brent Clevlen; infielders Jeff Larish, Mike Hessman and Michael Hollimon; and pitchers Chris Lambert, Eddie Bonine and Clay Rapada. Tigers broadcaster Mario Impemba and Hens pitching coach A.J. Sager are also on the list. Doors open at 6 p.m. ET, with festivities under way at 6:30. Leyland will be the keynote speaker. The event includes a fan Q&A session as in past years, but player autographs are not available.

Tickets for the event cost $50 for individuals or $500 for a table of 10, and can be purchased through the CYO by phone at 419-244-6711, ext. 609.

Also that night, Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski is scheduled to join outfielder Curtis Granderson at the West Michigan Whitecaps' 15th annual Winter Banquet at the J.W. Marriott hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. Festivities include a dinner and live auction before the Whitecaps present the inaugural class of their Hall of Fame. Former Whitecaps Francisco Cordero, Robert Fick and Brandon Inge will be inducted, with Fick scheduled to attend.

The caravan hits the road for a full schedule on Thursday, Jan. 22, with players and coaches divided onto the Metro Bus and West Bus. The Metro Bus will visit DMC Childrens Hospital, Detroit's Fire Academy Training Center and the American Red Cross office before making two public appearances. Nate Robertson and Zach Miner will team up for a children's book reading at Borders Bookstore in Novi from 6-6:30 p.m. Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen and Adam Everett will join Leyland, Granderson, Thames, Edwin Jackson, Ramon Santiago, Ryan Raburn, Dusty Ryan, Clete Thomas and others for a community rally at Brighton's Performing Arts Center from 5-7 p.m.

The next day's Metro schedule will send players around Metro Detroit and a stop in Saginaw before concluding with a Friday afternoon community rally at The Henry Ford in Dearborn from 1:30-2:30 p.m., and an appearance at the North American International Auto Show at Detroit's Cobo Center from 3-4:30 p.m.Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, Leyland, Cabrera, Ordonez, Guillen, Everett, Granderson, Jackson, Miner, Robertson, Raburn, Ryan and Thomas are among those scheduled to attend both events.

The West Bus begins on Jan. 22 and includes a rally at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, from 4:45 to 7 p.m. The second day of the tour begins with a 10:30 a.m. rally at Albion College and a 2 p.m. rally at Spring Arbor University.Scheduled passengers include Inge, Armando Galarraga, Fernando Rodney, Gerald Laird, Bobby Seay, Freddy Dolsi, Matt Treanor, Clevlen, Hollimon, Lambert, Larish, Bonine, Rapada, Wilkin Ramirez, Kyle Bloom and Casper Wells, along with assistant general manager Al Avila and coaches Rafael Belliard, Jeff Jones and Andy Van Slyke.

Jason Beck is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

Seriously, if anyone goes to the Fandemonium, please post pics. The Q&A session hopefully will be different this year. We waited for an hour and a half last year to see Bondo, Clay, Nate, Dontrelle, Gene Lamont, and Jimbo. No fan asked questions; one "host" asked from a preselected set of questions. Frown

My mom says I can skip next friday to go to henry ford....
My dad says I can't.
My brother says he is going to tell all my teachers to give me a test that day so my parents won't let me go.
And my sister says she'll let me go with her.
