Bobrob, check this website INFOLAW as to the rights your dad may have. Also, he needs to check with his union as to benefits.

He will have income choices...

If he was in a union, he would've been laid off a long time ago. He worked for Welform Electrodes. He made parts for welding guns.

He still should be able to get financial help, either through Welform or the government site for unemployment help.

We're getting rid of our land-line phone and just using the cellphone. We're also switching our cable and internet from WOW to AT&T so that we can get the cell phone, internet and cable all in one package. This will save about $90/month. We're also dropping the Free Press (we were going to lose 4 days a week anyways). They were also able to lower their credit card interest and loan interest, but that will freeze the credit card. I'll have to dip into my college savings to help out too. I can't lose the internet due to schoolwork.

Turns out the place he worked at is going to shut down for about a month. Most of the auto plants around here shut down the month of January and part of February. When they aren't working, they aren't using the welding guns, so they don't have to repair/replace them which wasn't bringing in any work. No work=no job. Hopefully by April he'll be back to work. It's gonna suck until then though.

Yeah, my dad would be laid off by now but his work goes by seniority and how well the employees have been to the company, so he lucked out, since he's been there a while and hasn't done too much while there for them to want to get rid of him.

I wished seniority counted where my dad worked. He's been there for 35 years and it doesn't mean Censored.

compared to most out of work people... that is good news! Hope they do start back up by April. This is the reason my mom was a saver. As a teacher, they did not get paid when we had summer vacation. And to make matters worse, they had to have money saved up in 1975, when Garden City had Michigan's longest teacher strike that ran until AFTER NEW YEARS DAY! No pay from July until mid January, that year. But because my mom remembered the depression, as a child, she always put aside a portion of each paycheck, in case of emergency. And this is from a one worker household. She more than made up for not working, by being a great money handler.

And we never wanted either. If we needed a new roof, she had saved, new car, the money was there for a newer used one. The key is a good budget!

Sounds like a lady we knew. she worked for the same company, full time, 40 years, but we found out they did not have retirement for any of their non executive workers. When Macy's bought the company out, she was let go. Here she was a 60 year old woman with no retirement, and out of work. She ended up having to get another job, at a bank, and work until she died.
