The Detroit Tigers have a long history of achievement by African-American players. Systematically barred from the game even in the immediate years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, the Tigers became a true reflection of the City of Detroit when Larry Doby put on the Old English D for the first time. (Dominican Ozzie Virgil became the Tigers first player of color and first player from a Spanish-speaking country a few years earlier.)

The achievements of African-American stars like Willie Horton, Gates Brown, Lou Whitaker, Cecil Fielder, Gary Sheffield & Curtis Granderson have thrilled and inspired generations of Tigers fans.

Tigers were the second to last team in the American League to break the color barrier

I think the Red Sox were the last team

But I am not sure

MLB Network has been having a lot of good historical coverage for Black History Month. We take it for granted most of the time, but Jackie Robinson had it beyond rough sometimes.
I've enjoyed learning the contributions the black players have made. I feel bad that the Tigers did not see it fit to integrate sooner, but we can only move forward.

I have been recording MLB Network's Ken Burns "Baseball" 9 innings series and it has really covered the troubles African-Americans have had integrating MLB.

Tomorrow they will have "Pride and Perseverance: The Story of the Negro Leagues" on at 9PM.
