Reliever suffers cut on thumb; outfielder hit on right tricep

DETROIT -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland is hoping that right-handed reliever Joel Zumaya will be able to pitch this weekend if needed following what the manager described as a "freak injury."

Zumaya left Friday night's game in the eighth inning after throwing just two pitches with a cut on his right thumb. When Leyland and Tigers Trainer Kevin Rand met Zumaya on the mound after his injury, the righty was bleeding.

"The blood was all over his pants," Leyland said. "I'm hoping he'll be OK [Saturday] and we can get [the cut] to close up."

Leyland isn't sure how the injury happened, but surmised that Zumaya may have rubbed a blister against his glove during a follow-through.

"It was a bit of freak thing, but I hope he'll be OK," Leyland said. "I didn't want to take any chances so I got him out of the game."

Zumaya is officially listed as day-to-day.

Zumaya was credited with a walk to Asdrubal Cabrera after Bobby Seay came in and threw two more balls to the Cleveland shortstop. The Indians had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth before Seay retired Shin-Soo Choo and Travis Hafner to end the threat.

The Tigers also had another injury when center fielder Josh Anderson was hit on his right tricep, above the elbow, by a Cliff Lee fastball in the fifth. After staying in to run, Leyland replaced Anderson with Curtis Granderson in the top of the sixth.
"Once we got [Anderson] back in the dugout, he already had a big welt on him," Leyland said. "He got dinged pretty good. [Rand] saw that he was struggling while out on the bases and we figured it was best to pull him."

Anderson is also listed as day-to-day.
