Tigers encouraged by progress of pitchers Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman at Toledo

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Nate Robertson (elbow) and Jeremy Bonderman (shoulder) have received promising reports regarding their rehabilitation assignments at Triple-A Toledo.

Robertson gave up one run on five hits Thursday night at Columbus, and Bonderman pitched two perfect innings.

"Bonderman looked really good with live fastballs at 92-94 (mph)," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "And Nate threw really well, too."

Tigers athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Robertson had a sharper breaking slider and more life on his fastball.

Robertson is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in four starts. Bonderman has a 7.00 ERA in seven relief appearances, but has improved lately and is mixing in a split-finger fastball.

Both should be ready to be recalled Sept. 1 or earlier.

Zumaya undergoes surgery

Reliever Joel Zumaya had arthroscopic surgery Friday to remove a bone fragment from his right shoulder and clean out his rotator cuff region.

Orthopedist James Andrews performed the surgery in Pensacola, Fla., and Rand said Andrews thought Zumaya would be ready to pitch at full strength in spring training.

Willis scratched

Rand said pitcher Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) was taken off his rehabilitation assignment after experiencing soreness in his right hip Wednesday while pitching for Toledo. Rand said he will begin working out when the inflammation leaves the irritated muscle area.

Bryan Kelly, a hip specialist in New York who performed surgery in April on catcher Matt Treanor, will review the X-rays and MRI taken of Willis' hip.

Rand said Treanor is progressing, but will not be able to return this season.

“It takes pitching, hitting and defense. Any two can win. All three make you unbeatable.”
