Saturday's game may be televised
By Paul Casella and Jason Beck / MLB.com | 09/13/11 8:30 PM ET

CHICAGO -- When the Tigers released their TV schedule for this season over the winter, they had 161 games slated to air between Fox Sports Detroit, FOX and ESPN. The lone game not scheduled for broadcast at that point was a Sept. 17 game in Oakland that fell within the FOX national window for exclusive broadcasts.

Few could've imagined then how much might ride on that game now. Depending on how the next few days unfold, it could potentially be a clinching game for the Tigers to wrap up their first division title in 24 years. With those implications now clear, the game could end up on the air after all.

"The possibility still exists," Tigers vice president of communications Ron Colangelo said on Tuesday.

Tim Bryant, director of media relations for Fox Sports Detroit, said basically the same thing.

"Needless to say, it's on the radar of us and the Tigers," Bryant wrote in an email.

The FOX blackout doesn't come up very often with the Tigers, who have had a fair number of Saturday games on the network as a regional broadcast this summer. When FOX has its games on the air Saturday, no other games can be broadcast in that same three-hour window. That's why a lot of teams schedule 1:05 p.m. games when FOX has games slated for 4:05 or, earlier in the year, 7:05. It's also why the Tigers ended up not having a mid-May game in Pittsburgh on the air when the Pirates chose a 7:05 start time.

For this Saturday's visit from the Tigers, the A's chose a day game -- a 1:05 p.m. start local time, or 4:05 p.m. ET. FOX has three games scheduled for regional broadcasts, but Tigers-A's isn't one of them.

To get the game on FOX Sports Detroit, the Tigers and the network would need to get FOX to waive its exclusivity rights. If there's a lot riding on that game, it's a possibility. From a logistics standpoint, that would seem easier than getting a FOX crew in, since FSD will have its crew in town already.

Progress made to televise Saturday's game
By Paul Casella and Jason Beck / MLB.com | 09/14/11 7:10 PM ET

CHICAGO -- The Tigers are making progress toward getting their Saturday afternoon game at Oakland on television, according to a source. But instead of working around the FOX blackout rules, it now appears the game would end up on FOX itself, at least in Michigan and Toledo.

The Detroit Free Press first reported the shift, saying the game will be on FOX 2 in Detroit beginning at 4 p.m. ET. While progress is being made, talks are believed to be ongoing with FOX and Major League Baseball. Some details still need to be addressed before anything is finalized, enough that neither the Tigers nor the network was ready to announce anything on Wednesday afternoon.

Another challenge that eventually has to be worked out is finding a sufficient crew.
Though Fox Sports Detroit has some crew members on the trip, that doesn't include such behind-the-scenes cogs as cameramen and some folks in the truck. With college football in full swing, Saturday is a busy day for television crews, which book games well in advance.

Saturday was the lone Tigers game not scheduled to be televised when the Tigers released their broadcast schedule in February. The 4:05 p.m. ET start time chosen by the A's falls into the FOX blackout window, and FOX had decided not to select it for one of its regional Game of the Week broadcasts.

FOX to broadcast Tigers game locally Saturday
Blackout will not be in effect for potential AL Central clincher
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 09/15/11 2:48 PM ET

OAKLAND -- Not even blackout rules are beating the Tigers these days. After a couple days of talks and logistics, the Tigers and Fox Sports Detroit reached an agreement with FOX Sports to broadcast Saturday's game against the A's on FOX network stations throughout Michigan, as well as Toledo, Ohio, beginning at 4 p.m. ET.

Saturday was originally the only game on the Tigers' regular-season schedule not slated to be televised on any outlet. The start time fell within the exclusive broadcast rights window for FOX to show its Saturday Game of the Week, but it wasn't on the slate of FOX regional broadcasts. Since the game is a potential clincher for the Tigers to wrap up their first division title since 1987, the blackout became a public issue.

The move is basically an end-around to the blackout rules, adding the game to the FOX slate specifically for the Tigers market. Fox Sports Detroit will produce the game, with Mario Impemba and Rod Allen on the call. The network worked on short notice to put together a crew.

Michigan FOX affiliates carrying the game include WJBK in Detroit, WBKB in Alpena, WSMH in Flint and Saginaw, WXMI in Grand Rapids, WSYM in Lansing and Jackson, WLUC in Marquette, and WFQX in Traverse City. WUPW in Toledo will also carry the game.

"We worked diligently with our colleagues at FOX Sports, Major League Baseball, the Tigers and the FOX stations and affiliates in our area to make this possible," Fox Sports Detroit senior vice president/general manager Greg Hammaren said in a statement. "We really appreciate FOX Sports stepping to the plate and granting permission to show the game. They understood the significance of our request so Tigers fans can have the opportunity to watch what could be another memorable day in the team's storied history."

With the Tigers' magic number at two for clinching the AL Central, there's a fair chance they will have wrapped up their first division title in 24 years by Saturday. But if it happens Saturday, Fox Sports Detroit will handle the postgame show with a special version of Tigers Live.
