Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (3-0, 2.70 ERA)

Fister made his spring struggles a distant memory with three consecutive wins to open the season, including seven innings of four-hit ball Tuesday in Seattle. He fanned 10 Angels over eight innings of one-run ball last July.

Angels: LHP C.J. Wilson (1-0, 4.00 ERA)

Wilson notched his first quality start in a win over the Astros on Sunday, rebounding from a rough first couple of innings to pitch six innings of one-run ball, despite walking four. Wilson had a 4.61 ERA in two starts vs. the Tigers last season.

Fister up for challenge as Tigers try to solve Halos

By John Schlegel / MLB.com | 4/20/2013 7:55 PM ET

After back-to-back offensive outbursts against the Tigers served notice that the Angels might be getting their engines humming, it's Doug Fister's turn to try and throw a monkey wrench in that plan.

A 10-0 defeat of the Tigers on Saturday put the Angels in position for what would be their first series sweep of the season, but Fister is liable to put up a formidable defense as he faces off against C.J. Wilson in the finale of this early meeting between American League powerhouses.

The Angels have won four straight home games, and five consecutive games against the Tigers, dating to last season.

This weekend already has represented a bit of an awakening by their bats, highlighted by a nine-run first inning on Saturday. Mark Trumbo, who has a hit in 14 of the Angels' 16 games this season, was one of four players with multiple hits in Saturday's game, and Mike Trout added his second homer of the season with his first career grand slam.

So it's a suddenly hot team facing Fister, but this isn't Fister's first rodeo against the Angels. In his third season with the Tigers after playing for the Mariners, Fister is 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA in two starts at Angel Stadium, but overall is 2-3 with a 3.49 ERA in seven career starts against the Angels.

In his last outing, Fister cruised to victory against his former team, beating the Mariners with seven innings of strong work, allowing two runs on seven hits to raise his record to 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA.

Wilson, meanwhile, is 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA this season. Against the Tigers, he is 1-2 with a career ERA of 5.04. In his last outing against the Astros, Wilson allowed one run in six innings.

Tigers: Hunter's homecoming weekend
Torii Hunter, now batting .400 on the season, went hitless in the second game of his return to Angel Stadium, that after going 2-for-4 in the opener. Sunday's game will mark his last appearance of the season there, barring an October meeting between the two clubs.

Hunter, who played for the Angels from 2008-12, is two homers shy of 300, collected his 2,000th hit earlier this season and has 11 multihit games in his first 17 this season.

Angels: Jimenez making early impression
Luis Jimenez has been in the Majors for a little over a week and has made a strong impression. Angels manager Mike Scioscia wouldn't compare his immediate impact directly to Trout's, but did say there are some parallels.

"I think it's unfair to compare anybody to Mike as far as what Mike Trout did in his first go around playing every day last season, it was off the charts, but I think there's definite parallels you can draw between the energy, between the way they go about getting ready for a game, during the game in the dugout, on the field," Scioscia said. "These kids come up playing hard and that's indicative of what our Minor League system is about. Those guys are two examples of that."

Worth noting
• After a long nine-game road trip to the West Coast, the Tigers will head home after Sunday's game to start a nine-game homestand on Tuesday with the opener of a series against the Royals.

• A key early homestand for the Angels continues with a visit from the Texas Rangers, the AL West rivals in town for a three-game set starting on Monday.

• The Angels and Tigers will meet again June 25-27 in Detroit.
