GDT24: 4/29/13 - DET (13-10) VS MIN (11-10) - 7:08 p.m. ET

--- VS ---

Detroit Tigers VS Minnesota Twins
Monday, April 29, 2013
Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Game Time - 7:08 p.m. EDT

______________________________________

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (2-0, 4.13 ERA)

Twice in four starts, Scherzer has struggled to come back after sitting in the dugout while the Tigers rallied, a problem he says he needs to address. With a 3-to-2 ratio of strikeouts to innings, he's still pitching fairly well.

Twins: RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-2, 7.94 ERA)

Pelfrey, who is still less than a year removed from having Tommy John surgery, tossed a season-low 4 2/3 innings on Tuesday against the Marlins. He gave up five runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two.

Twins, Tigers aim to continue Central's arms race
Scherzer, Pelfrey to meet in hopes of following in rotations' footsteps

By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 4/28/2013 11:32 PM ET

Pitching reigns supreme in the American League Central.

The Tigers have won consecutive division titles on the back of ace Justin Verlander, who merited the 2011 Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards. Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister and Max Scherzer have banded together to compose a more-than-formidable rotation in Detroit.

The Royals have ascended to the top of the standings in the early going thanks to a revamped rotation. Winter additions Ervin Santana, James Shields and Wade Davis all sport ERAs of 3.20 or lower.

The Twins are trying to get to that point. Their pitching staff as a whole posted a 4.77 ERA last year, the third-worst mark in the big leagues. This season, Minnesota hurlers have compiled a 3.73 ERA, which might explain why the Twins are 11-10, as opposed to last season, when they started 10-26.

Offseason additions Vance Worley and Mike Pelfrey have struggled a bit, but Kevin Correia has fashioned a 3-1 record and 2.23 ERA. Overall, manager Ron Gardenhire is pleased with what his starters have given him.

"For the most part, they're all giving us a chance," Gardenhire said. "They're competing, and they pay attention in the dugout, and they're always talking in the dugout. So yeah, we feel good running them out there."

Consider Tigers skipper Jim Leyland impressed.

"They went out and got those pitchers this winter that have a pretty good feel for control," Leyland said. "That's what it looks like to me. They wanted some guys who were going to throw the ball over the plate and have an idea how to pitch."

Pelfrey will take the hill at Comerica Park in Monday's series opener, almost one year to the day from when he had Tommy John surgery. Pelfrey, who had the operation May 1, is 2-2 with a 7.94 ERA in four starts this season, having yielded 29 hits in 17 innings.

"Pelfrey is a student of the game, and he helps some of the younger guys," Gardenhire said. "He watches a lot of film and the whole package. He's coming off a serious injury, so he has a lot of stuff on his table, but he's still around to help the younger guys, which is important."

Scherzer (2-0, 4.13 ERA) will attempt to match the recent dominance displayed by his colleagues. Scherzer leads the team with 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings, but it was Sanchez who fanned a franchise-record 17 batters Friday. Sanchez, Verlander and Fister all tote ERAs of 2.38 or lower.

Twins: Award-winning slugger honored
Left fielder Josh Willingham was recognized before Sunday's contest for winning the Silver Slugger Award in 2012. Willingham clubbed a career-high 35 homers and tallied 110 RBIs to earn his first such distinction.

"It's deservedly so," Gardenhire said. "We thought he should've been an All-Star last year. But he didn't get picked, which was a big disappointment for our organization and him I'm sure. But he had a great year and did everything he was supposed to do when we brought him over here. So it's well-deserved."

Tigers: Scherzer The Strikeout Machine

• Scherzer has punched out at least one batter in all but four innings he has completed this season. He has tallied 36 strikeouts across 24 innings, and he has averaged more than one per frame in each of his four starts. His 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings through Sunday were tied with Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish for most in the Majors among starting pitchers.

• Left fielder Andy Dirks is available to play and could even start on Monday. A sore right knee has kept him sidelined since Wednesday. Leyland cautioned, however, that Dirks is still not 100 percent.

Worth noting
• Willingham hit his 25th home run at Target Field on Saturday, the most in the ballpark's brief history.

• The Twins took two of three from the Tigers in a season-opening series at Target Field.

• Leyland said Sunday that right fielder Torii Hunter will be given the day off on Monday. Hunter, batting .375 on the season, has played in 22 of Detroit's 23 games.

Game 24: Scherzer throws Twins a curve
BECK'S BLOG
Posted on April 30, 2013 at 2:50 am

Max Scherzer did little to dampen his strikeout rate Monday, fanning 10 Minnesota Twins over 7 1/3 innings. Neither Justin Morneau nor Joe Mauer accounted for any of them.

That’s fine for Scherzer. More important for him, they didn’t account for any hits. You can make the case that had more of an impact on his bottom line than the strikeouts.

Alex Avila didn’t want to choose which was more important.

“Both,” he said.

Morneau and Mauer are a major reason why Scherzer had a 5.40 career ERA and a 3-2 record in nine starts against the Twins over the last three years. They were a combined 13-for-30 with four home runs and five walks.

Scherzer has been progressively better against the Twins with each season. A big reason has been his success against Minnesota’s left-handed hitters, including those two. On Monday, he had a curveball for them.

Actually, he had several of them. That, he says, was his answer. It has been largely a show-me pitch for him since last summer, but after an adjustment, it was a big pitch for him Monday.

“Honestly, it was my curveball tonight,” Scherzer said. “That’s a pitch I’ve really been working on. I knew coming that they have a lot of good left-handed hitters. In my bullpen session, [pitching coach Jeff Jones] gave me a little tip to help improve my grip so that I can be more consistent with that pitch. It worked in the pen, so over the past couple days I’ve been throwing it. I thought this was going to be a good pitch for me tonight and it was.”

The data on MLB.com Gameday does not show a curveball, only sliders for breaking balls. The pitches around 79-82 mph, he said, were curveballs. There were up to a dozen of those on the data, according to brooksbaseball.net.

“I think I threw about 10-12 curveballs, and they were pretty consistent,” Scherzer said. “I don’t think I had any strikeouts on it. I was able to throw it for a strike where it was competitive or it was just missing. So for me, that threw a whole wrinkle in there that they had to now respect for me to be able to throw that curveball. I feel like when I can do that, it gives me a third pitch for a lefty that allows my fastball and changeup to be effective.”

Play of the game: It’s not difficult to make a good case for Prince Fielder’s go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning, but there’s an argument that Andy Dirks’ leadoff bunt single two batters earlier was the spark that started it all. It was a reaction to third baseman Trevor Plouffe playing back, and it put a runner on for Mike Pelfrey to worry about as he pitched against Miguel Cabrera.

“It’s taking advantage of what’s given to you,” said third-base coach Tom Brookens, who handles the bunting game.

Out of the game: Scherzer stayed in for the first batter of the eighth with the top of the Twins order coming up, pitting him against Brian Dozier with his pitch count already at 108. Scherzer had to go to a full count, but struck out Dozier swinging at a 94 mph fastball on his 114th and final pitch. With nobody on for Mauer, Drew Smyly and Joaquin Benoit took it from there.

“It takes pitching, hitting and defense. Any two can win. All three make you unbeatable.”
