Detroit Tigers AT Texas Rangers
Sunday, May 19, 2013
Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Arlington, TX
Game Time - 8:05 p.m. EDT

______________________________________

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (5-1, 3.06 ERA)

A between-starts adjustment helped Fister in his last start, as he held down the Astros for seven innings with seven strikeouts. He'll face a Rangers squad that hit him for nine runs over 4 1/3 innings in their lone meeting last year.

Rangers: LHP Derek Holland (3-2, 2.93 ERA)

Holland didn't get a decision in his last start vs. Oakland when he allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings, and he is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in May. He made three starts at the Ballpark in Arlington this season and is 1-1 with a 1.57 ERA.

PREVIEW
Fister, Holland wrap up series for Tigers, Rangers
Starters hope to give bullpens a break during ESPN finale

By Quinn Roberts / MLB.com | 5/19/2013 12:18 AM ET

In a rotation with two rookie right-handers and a converted reliever, Rangers left-hander Derek Holland has become increasingly important to his team.

Delivering a level of consistency so far this season, Holland has tossed seven or more innings and allowed four runs or fewer in six of his eight starts.

He'll look to give the Rangers that same kind of boost on Sunday against the Tigers in the series finale in Arlington.

Holland started strong in his last outing against the A's, before coughing up a 3-0 lead. The Rangers came back to win in 10 innings, but the left-hander took a no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

"What I liked was what I saw in the four innings," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "What I didn't like was what he did in the fifth and sixth.

"He wasn't putting the ball in the same spots he had been. I don't know if he lost his focus, but he just wasn't in tune with the game anymore. It looked like it almost got out of control for him."

Meanwhile, Doug Fister (5-1, 3.06 ERA) takes the hill for the Tigers, looking to continue his hot start to the season.

Fister tossed seven innings in his last start against the Astros, allowing just two runs on five hits for the win. He also struck out seven and walked none.

With a Tigers bullpen tossing 14 innings in the first three games of the series, a similar outing by Fister on Sunday would be just what the doctor ordered.

"They've all done a good job. It's a good group of starters," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We've been in our bullpen a little quicker than we normally do, but that happens. You've got to be prepared for that."

Tigers: Garcia starts in center field

Avisail Garcia got the start in center field for the Tigers, just his second of the year, and batted eighth in Saturday's game against the Rangers.

With the Tigers' everyday center fielder Austin Jackson on the 15-day disabled list since Sunday with a pulled left hamstring, Don Kelly had been in center the previous six games.

"[Garcia] hasn't played there a whole lot but he's played some," Leyland said Saturday. "I know he can run and he can throw, obviously. He's the best choice to put there. We'll put him out there tonight and he'll play tomorrow as well. I don't want him to sit too long."

Garcia finished the game going 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Rangers: Kinsler out of lineup

Ian Kinsler was out of the Rangers' lineup for the second straight game with sore ribs Saturday night.

Elvis Andrus was once again bumped up into the leadoff spot and finished 5-for-5, while Washington placed left fielder David Murphy in the No. 2 spot.

"He's still a little tender," Washington said of Kinsler. "We'll give him another day and reassess [Sunday]."

Worth noting
• Holland is 1-1 with a 1.57 ERA in three starts at home in 2013.

• Leyland said on Saturday that Jackson should return "on time." Jackson is eligible to return May 26.
