Detroit Tigers AT Baltimore Orioles

Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD
Game Time - 7:05 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (7-0, 3.42 ERA)

The way Scherzer is mixing pitches and limiting the bad stretches that once plagued him, he might be the nastiest Tigers starter. He retired 25 consecutive batters and went 38 batters between hits over his last two starts.

Orioles: RHP Miguel Gonzalez (2-2, 3.94 ERA)

Gonzalez has been sharp since returning from a blister to his throwing hand that forced him to miss roughly three weeks. In two starts since coming back, the 28-year-old allowed three runs over 12 2/3 innings, while walking three and striking out 12.

PREVIEW
Undefeated Scherzer faces challenge in talented O's
Gonzalez starts for Orioles; top sluggers Davis, Cabrera clash

By Joey Nowak / MLB.com | 5/30/2013 11:51 PM ET

The way things are going for him, Max Scherzer might currently be the Tigers' toughest starter. And we all know that's saying something.

In a loaded rotation that features Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister and former MVP Justin Verlander, Scherzer is a perfect 7-0 this year with a chance to boost his win total to eight on Friday night against the Orioles.

It bears mentioning that Scherzer's seven wins have come against the Yankees, Royals, Twins (twice), Astros and Indians (twice). Three of those teams are in fourth or last place in their respective divisions, so beating the talented Orioles would lend a bit more credibility to Scherzer's mark.

Baltimore, which just finished up a Beltways Interleague series with the Nationals, picked up steam during the second half of last season and has carried it over into 2013. The Orioles have won seven of their last 10, and have the most wins (71) in baseball since July 29 of last year.

It's the prolific offense that has helped carry Baltimore toward the top of the contentious American League East division. Entering Thursday, the O's were leading the AL in runs, hits, doubles, home runs, slugging percentage, extra-base hits, stolen bases and OPS. They've homered 22 times in their last 10 games.

"Offensively they look very good," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "They've got a lot of guys with good averages. [Chris Davis] has been having a heck of a year."

No question it will be a tough task for Scherzer, who retired 25 consecutive batters and went 38 batters between hits over his last two starts.

"The way he's pitched, that's really impressive," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said. "Especially against Cleveland's lineup, with the guys that they have here in the middle of the [Twins'] lineup, that's not an easy feat. That just shows what kind of stuff he has.

"When he's able to locate, he's going to be almost untouchable. He can get away with mistakes because his stuff's so good."

Baltimore will counter with righty Miguel Gonzalez, who has been much better since returning from a blister to his throwing hand that forced him to miss roughly three weeks.

In the two outings since his return, Gonzalez has allowed three runs over 12 2/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking just three.

"Having that rest helped me out a little bit," Gonzalez said earlier this month. "Last year, they pushed me back a couple times, and working with [pitching coach] Rick Adair in the bullpen and between starts helped me out pretty good."

Orioles: Davis keeps crushing
• After earning AL Player of the Month honors for April, Davis has not slowed down. He is hitting .426 (32-for-75) in his last 20 games with nine doubles, nine walks, 10 home runs, 20 runs scored and 20 RBIs.

Davis is hitting 18-for-33 (.545) over his last eight games. He's also scored a run in eight of nine ballgames.

• Rule 5 draftee T.J. McFarland has worked two or more complete innings in nine of his 12 appearances this season.

Tigers: Cabrera, too
There are few players who can hold a candle to Davis' numbers this season, but Miguel Cabrera is one of them. The reigning AL MVP and Triple Crown winner joins Davis in the top two spots in the three Triple Crown categories among AL hitters.

Cabrera leads in batting average and RBIs, while Davis holds the advantage in homers.

With more doubles (18 to Cabrera's 13) as well as homers (19-15), Davis also holds the lead over Cabrera in OPS, a category Cabrera led last year.

The flip side is that Davis strikes out a lot. He's down from last year's pace, but with 48 strikeouts in his first 53 games, he still entered Thursday in the AL's top 20.

Cabrera has 11 home runs and 31 RBIs this month.

Worth noting
• Detroit's Torii Hunter will miss the next two games to travel home to Texas to watch his sons graduate from high school. Also recovering after taking a pitch off his left elbow Wednesday night, he's expected to return for Sunday's series finale.

• The Tigers' pitching staff leads the Majors in strikeouts. Scherzer and Verlander, the Tigers' starters the next two games, rank third and second in the league, respectively, in strikeouts per nine innings.

• Earlier this week, Steve Johnson became the 13th Orioles pitcher to record a win this year. Last season, Baltimore had 17 pitchers record a win (including Davis).
