Game Time - 4:05 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (6-4, 3.68 ERA)

The man known for his power fastball has been getting hitters on changeups, curveballs and sliders while he tries to reign his fastball again. He's 7-0 with a 2.85 ERA against the O's, including 5-0 at Camden Yards.

Orioles: RHP Jason Hammel (7-2, 4.98 ERA)

Hammel was dominant in a win over the Nationals on Monday. In his longest start since last June 22, the right-hander struck out eight and didn't walk a batter in eight innings of two-run ball.

PREVIEW
Orioles, Tigers look to continue power display
Verlander has allowed just three homers; Hammel has allowed eight

By Jason Mastrodonato / MLB.com | 5/31/2013 11:32 PM ET

Welcome to the home run show.

As if it wasn't to be expected. With the Tigers and the Orioles together, there were bound to be some balls put over the wall.

The series continues on Saturday, but Friday night's 7-5 win for the Orioles may have been a good hint of what's to come between two teams that have combined to hit 134 home runs.

The Orioles hung around until the late innings thanks to a two-run shot by Adam Jones, his 11th on the season. And 11 may seem like such a small number compared to teammate Chris Davis, who leads the Majors with 19.

"For a power hitter, he's been pretty consistent so far," manager Buck Showalter said. "Defense and how he's handled the success that's come his way is the thing I'm most proud of. I think we all know, Chris, his contact-to-damage ratio is pretty good."

And then came the ninth inning, when Nick Markakis went yard and Chris Dickerson later followed with a three-run shot, capping off a night in which the team that hit more homers won.

The Tigers were led by a pair of jacks from Avisail Garcia and Miguel Cabrera, who hit his 16th of the season while recording his Major League-leading 61st RBI. Detroit has been swinging the bats so often that manager Jim Leyland canceled batting practice on Friday, which was as much a testament to his team's workload as it was the 90-degree temperatures.

"I think guys that are playing every day, personally, I think they hit way too much," Leyland explained. "I think they take too much batting practice, too much soft-toss, too much [hitting in the] cage, too much live BP. But that's just my opinion. I'm not saying I'm right. It's a tricky thing now. I think it's just something that's become more of a habit."

Between Cabrera and Davis, this series contains the two front-runners for the American League MVP Award.

But pitching counts too, and Baltimore pitchers have allowed 72 homers this season, third most in the Majors, while the Tigers rank among the best in the league with just 34 home runs allowed.

Leading the Tigers is Saturday's starter, Justin Verlander, who has served up just three homers all year and is coming off a 13-strikeout performance against the Pirates. While Verlander has uncharacteristically posted an 8.69 ERA over his last four starts, he's still fanned 32 batters in a span of 19 2/3 innings.

For the Orioles, Jason Hammel takes the mound and is looking to build off two straight successful starts following a poor run of his own to start May. Hammel hasn't performed as well as he did in his breakout 2012 campaign, and home runs have been at the center of the problem: After allowing nine homers in 118 innings last year, he's served up eight in just 65 innings in 2013.

Tigers: Jackson taking steps toward return
Austin Jackson sprinted around first base as if he was legging out a double before the game on Friday, a positive sign after he pulled his left hamstring a few weeks ago.

Jackson told FOX Sports Detroit on Thursday that he hopes to begin a Minor League rehab assignment next week.

The Tigers could use him.

"You're seeing a little bit of the absence of Austin starting to catch up with us," Leyland said.

Orioles: Johnson back on track
After blowing four saves in 12 days -- a span of six appearances -- closer Jim Johnson made adjustments to improve his offspeed pitches and has posted two straight clean saves.

Last year, Johnson led the Majors with 51 saves, blowing just three. He has 17 saves this year.

"I look at everything, you take the good with the bad," Johnson said. "You watch the video, you take what you take out of it. You can overanalyze things, but there's keys in my delivery, there's keys in being successful and I'm going to continue to focus on those."

Worth noting
• Jose Valverde blew his second save of the season Friday, allowing two homers in the ninth after allowing just three homers all of last season.

• Davis is 20-for-37 (.541) with six homers and nine RBIs in his last 10 games, but is just 2-for-11 in his career off Verlander.

• The Orioles have won eight of their last 11 games, but not by much: The average run differential in their victories has been about 2 1/2 runs per game.
