--- AT ---

Detroit Tigers AT Baltimore Orioles
Sunday, June 2, 2013
Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD
Game Time - 1:35 p.m. EDT

______________________________________

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (2-2, 5.29 ERA)

Porcello has given up 21 hits in 11 1/3 innings over two starts at Camden Yards, but he hasn't pitched in Baltimore since April 2011. His sinker could be big against an Orioles offense that puts a lot of pitches in play.

Orioles: RHP Kevin Gausman (0-2, 11.00 ERA)

The Nationals rocked Gausman in his second career start Tuesday. The 22-year-old gave up three home runs, including a three-run blast in the first inning, and allowed seven earned runs in four innings.

PREVIEW

Gausman tasked with taming Tigers in Camden debut
Rookie Orioles righty will be matched opposite Porcello in series finale

By John Schlegel / MLB.com | 6/1/2013 7:54 PM ET

For a young starter trying to establish a foothold in the Major Leagues, the prospect of facing the Tigers' lineup is a daunting one, and Saturday's powerful outburst by Detroit's bats doesn't make it appear any less so.

The Tigers ripped four homers in one inning -- something that had never been done against the Orioles before -- among five total in Saturday's lopsided victory, and now 22-year-old Kevin Gausman gets to try to quell the offensive noise from the visitors to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in his third starting assignment in the big leagues on Sunday.

Gausman, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, has had a rough introduction to the Majors with his first two starts, both on the road, allowing 11 earned runs in nine innings of work, allowing four homers.

With a high-90s fastball and an excellent changeup, Gausman has the type of talent that the Orioles are confident will come around, and he's getting plenty of help from his Orioles teammates and staff.

"I expect Gaus to pitch well," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Of course, I always do. You keep drawing in all these things. You also have to be able to go, 'OK, I heard that, but that doesn't work for me. And this I'll take in.' The bottom line is, sooner or later, they're going to quit playing (the national anthem) and you're going to have to pitch. All that other stuff, you take it in."

In Rick Porcello, the Tigers have a starter who has found a bit of a groove lately, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in his last three starts, including eight shutout innings against the Pirates his last time out.

Porcello is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five career starts against the O's. He has given up 21 hits in 11 1/3 innings in two career starts at Camden Yards, but he hasn't pitched in Baltimore since April 2011.

Tigers: Cabrera just keeps cranking
Miguel Cabrera added his fourth career grand slam Saturday to what already has been a tremendous follow-up to his Triple Crown season. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Cabrera is the first player in Major League history to enter June batting at least .340 with 15 or more home runs and 60 or more RBIs, and he added to his totals Saturday.

With his grand slam, Cabrera is batting .369 with 17 homers and 65 RBIs, leading the Majors in average and RBIs and behind only Baltimore's Chris Davis (19) in homers. His RBI roll remains on pace with Hank Greenberg's team-record 1937 season, when he drove in 183 runs.

Orioles: Snyder in the squat
Showalter said he'll go with veteran backup Chris Snyder behind the plate with Gausman on the mound. The move is in part to give starter Matt Wieters back-to-back days off with Monday's off-day, but it's also a first chance to see how Gausman and Snyder work together on the field.

"I was walking down the hall today and I saw him and Gaus paired up in the video room, talking, writing some things down, looking at some things," Showalter said. "I talked to Matt yesterday about not playing to see if that matched up with how he's feeling. I really want to give him the benefit of two days in a row if I can on Sunday."

Worth noting
• Following Sunday's finale, the Tigers will head home for three against the Rays starting Tuesday and three against the Indians next weekend. The Orioles head out on the road for three at Houston and three at Tampa Bay.

• Last year's season series between the teams wound up tied at 3, with each team winning two of three on the road.

• The Tigers and Orioles will meet again from June 17-19 in Detroit.
