--- VS ---

Detroit Tigers VS Tampa Bay Rays
Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Game Time - 7:08 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (5-5, 2.79 ERA)

Sanchez spent much of May alternating dazzling wins and crushing losses. He was in line for a victory Wednesday in Pittsburgh before the Pirates scored four runs in a 12-pitch stretch of the seventh inning.

Rays: LHP Matt Moore (8-0, 2.18 ERA)

The southpaw tossed only one inning on Friday night before rain interfered with his outing. This season, the Rays are 10-1 when Moore starts a game.

PREVIEW
Rays' Moore takes on Tigers, seeks 9-0 start
Lefty moves up to oppose Sanchez in Tuesday opener in Detroit

By Adam Berry / MLB.com | 6/2/2013 5:20 PM ET

The Rays came up with a way to get Matt Moore back on the mound after his most recent attempt to push his record to 9-0 was almost immediately cut short by rain.

Tampa Bay, 7-1 over its last eight games, reconfigured its rotation to have the 23-year-old lefty start Tuesday's series opener at Comerica Park against Detroit and right-hander Anibal Sanchez.

Moore was scheduled to pitch Thursday's finale of the three-game series, but the Rays will send right-handers Alex Cobb and Roberto Hernandez to the mound against Doug Fister and Max Scherzer on Wednesday and Thursday. Rays manager Joe Maddon said Moore, who threw only 11 pitches before nearly five hours worth of rain delays, was ready to pitch again Sunday.

"But there's the off-day [Monday], so why really push it?" Maddon said. "Move Matt back until Tuesday, comfortably put Cobb in on Wednesday with the finger issue, which seems to be getting a lot better, and that moves Roberto back to the last day. So it worked out pretty well. In spite of all the craziness, it's OK."

Moore hasn't factored into the decision in either of his last two outings, including Friday's rain-delayed start in Cleveland. But he's coming off a strong May -- 3-0 with a 3.30 ERA -- and his scoreless inning Friday lowered his ERA to 2.18, among the lowest in the Majors.

Sanchez may not share Moore's unblemished record, but he's also been one of the American League's best starters, carrying a 5-5 record and 2.79 ERA into Tuesday's outing.

After tossing a 12-strikeout one-hitter against the Twins on May 24, Sanchez battled through one of his roughest starts this year Wednesday in Pittsburgh. His final line -- five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings -- wasn't totally indicative of his performance, however.

Sanchez held the Pirates to one run on two hits through 6 1/3 innings before everything came undone in the seventh. He said he started to overthrow at that point in the game, and that caused him to miss his spots. In the span of 12 pitches, he gave up a single, a walk, two doubles, threw a wild pitch and allowed an RBI bunt single.

"In the big leagues, stuff can happen fast," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after that game. "Obviously we didn't expect it to happen that fast."

"Before that [seventh] inning, I think everything was working good," Sanchez added, "especially location."

Rays: Cobb good to go
• Cobb's last start was pushed back due to a cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand, but he should be fine to pitch Wednesday. The right-hander, whose start was initially pushed back to Tuesday, threw a bullpen session Saturday in Cleveland and reported back with no pain. He threw all fastballs, but also mixed in a few curveballs off flat ground. Still, it made more sense for the Rays to give Cobb another day to heal and send Moore back to the mound.

• Somewhat surprisingly, the Rays didn't make another roster move to bolster their bullpen before Sunday's game, so lefty Alex Torres will stay with the team to work in long relief. Torres has thrown 8 1/3 shutout innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just one hit and three walks over his three appearances. Tampa Bay could have called up another arm to use Sunday, but with Monday's off-day and plenty of late-inning options available Sunday, the club stood pat.

Tigers: Martinez reacquired, Berry designated for assignment
• Detroit traded a player to be named or cash considerations to the Mariners on Sunday for Francisco Martinez, the key prospect sent to Seattle in the Doug Fister trade. Martinez was the Tigers' No. 4 prospect two years ago, going to the All-Star Futures Game in 2011 and playing third base for Double-A Erie.

He hit .227 with 16 doubles, two homers and 23 RBIs for Double-A Jackson last year and was hitting only .206 this season before he was designated for assignment May 27. He was optioned to Class A Lakeland upon being acquired by Detroit.

• To make room for Martinez on the 40-man roster, the Tigers had to designate for assignment the contract of Quintin Berry, a midseason call-up last year who nearly made the club out of camp this spring. He was hitting just .168 with a .278 on-base percentage for Triple-A Toledo. Detroit has 10 days to either trade him, release him or outright him to Toledo if we goes unclaimed on waivers.

Worth noting
• The Tigers have won the last two season series against the Rays, 5-2 in 2012 and 6-1 in '11. Detroit is 57-53 all-time against Tampa Bay and 29-25 at home.

• The Rays are 17-7 since May 8, the best record in the AL.
