Detroit Tigers VS Tampa Bay Rays

Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Game Time - 7:08 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (5-2, 3.28 ERA)

Fister struck out 12 Pirates over seven dominant innings of four-hit ball, but didn't get a decision in a game that went scoreless into the 11th. He'll hope for the same results on the mound and better run support against the Rays.

Rays: RHP Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.66 ERA)

Cobb, dealing with a cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand, hasn't taken the hill since May 26. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA over his last three starts.

PREVIEW

Finger healed, Cobb resumes action vs. Tigers
Rays righty squares off with Fister, who's coming off a 12-K start

By Quinn Roberts / MLB.com | 6/5/2013 1:37 AM ET

Rays right-hander Alex Cobb has been itching to get back on the mound since his previous start, on May 26.

He'll have that chance on Wednesday against the Tigers at Comerica Park now that the cut on his right middle finger is fully healed.

"I had that itch going when it was supposed to be my turn Friday," Cobb said. "[The time off has been] much needed, because I would not have been able to be effective if we didn't take this extra time, so it was a smart move to do it. Now I'm definitely ready to get back out there."

Cobb threw some offspeed pitches on Monday and Tuesday without pain. Those pitches in particular bothered the cut on his finger before he took time off.

"Everything worked out well. It's been pain-free, so it should be good to go," he said. "It will be like a normal game for me tomorrow. Hopefully, it won't be too much of an adjustment, not being out on the mound for a while. I think I have a pretty good hold on it, so I should feel pretty comfortable out there."

Cobb will be up against right-hander Doug Fister, who had his best start of the season in his most recent outing, against the Pirates on Thursday.

Fister struck out a season-high 12 in that contest, allowing just four hits in seven innings, but he took a no-decision after Detroit lost, 1-0, in 11 innings.

Fister thus became the first Tigers pitcher since 1916 to strike out 12 or more over seven scoreless innings without earning a victory.

"Terrific, gutty performance," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after that game.

Rays: Joyce working on bad habits

Matt Joyce got to Comerica Park early on Tuesday to get in a little extra practice with outfield coach George Hendrick.

"I just told the outfield coach that I wanted to get a couple more reps, just get a little more comfortable," Joyce said. "There's just been some situations the last couple of weeks where I thought I could take better routes. I had a chance at catching a couple of balls. We take a lot of pride in our defense, and it's no different in the outfield."

A fly ball hit Joyce in the back during Friday night's game, which prompted teammates to tape a ball to his back the next day. And though everyone had a good laugh, Joyce believes he's developed some bad habits recently.

"I think generally, balls hit over my head or to the gap, I tend to take a route more direct toward it, which puts you in a bad situation," he said. "Generally, in the outfield, you want to take a deeper route to the ball and keep it to the side; you don't really want to get right under the ball, because then you get tangled up, and that's what's been happening."

Tigers: Marte finished for 2013
Right-hander Luis Marte underwent season-ending surgery last week in Florida to clean up his right shoulder.

The 26-year-old spent parts of the last two seasons with the Tigers and was in Spring Training camp with the team before returning to Triple-A Toledo. He pitched in just three April games for the Mud Hens before being shut down.

After further examination, doctors recommended surgery to clean up debris around his right labrum rather than a more serious reconstruction. Dr. Koco Eaton performed the surgery.

Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said that Marte will rehab for about three months before beginning a throwing program.

Worth noting
• Cobb is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA over his last three starts.

• The Royals claimed outfielder Quintin Berry off waivers from the Tigers on Tuesday and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha. He had been designated for assignment on Sunday to make room for Minor League third baseman Francisco Martinez.
