--- VS ---

Detroit Tigers VS Cleveland Indians
Friday, June 7, 2013
Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Game Time - 7:08 p.m. EDT

______________________________________

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (7-4, 3.70 ERA)

Verlander has won his last three starts with help from run support, the latest a 10-3 win in Baltimore with seven quality innings. He beat the Indians in a rain-delayed slugfest in Cleveland on May 22.

Indians: RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (4-3, 4.83 ERA)

Jimenez dominated Rays hitters on Saturday, holding them to three infield hits and a double over eight shutout innings. He also had seven strikeouts and a walk. In his last seven outings, the righty is 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA.

PREVIEW
Hoping to find mojo, Indians open series in Detroit
Cleveland starts hot arm in Ubaldo, who has task in duel with Verlander

By Mark Emery / MLB.com | 6/6/2013 6:11 PM ET

The Indians finally caught a break from their gruesome schedule with an off-day on Thursday. Frankly, they needed it.

After being swept at Yankee Stadium to start the week, the Tribe is 4-12 over its past 16 games. What's coming next won't be easy to handle, either, as Cleveland has three games in Detroit and three more in Texas before that welcome return to Progressive Field.

The first of those six games will be played on Friday, with Cleveland's hottest pitcher, Ubaldo Jimenez, set to toe the rubber. The problem for the Indians, though, is that Jimenez is facing Tigers ace Justin Verlander.

Friday's game will mark the third time this season that Jimenez and Verlander have gone head to head.

Jimenez is 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA in his last seven starts. The lone defeat came against the Tigers on May 22, when the right-hander gave up six runs over four innings.

That outing marks the only time Jimenez gave up more than two runs in a game since April 21. He's 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA against Detroit. In his last start, Jimenez held Tampa Bay to four hits -- three that remained in the infield -- over eight shutout innings.

"Now, I think he's more of a pitcher," Tribe manager Terry Francona said. "His offspeed is very good. His fastball is still, you know, you're talking 93, 94, 95 [mph] with unbelievable movement. I just think he knows that he can pitch in the zone and get outs."

Jimenez is 4-3 with a 4.83 ERA. He can't afford to come out flat or wild against Verlander, who has received some healthy run support en route to three straight wins.

Verlander certainly hasn't been as dominant this year as Tigers fans are used to seeing. In 12 outings, he's 7-4 with a 3.70 ERA and owns a 1-1 record and 7.50 ERA against Cleveland.

The Tigers' ace was the winning pitcher in the May 22 matchup against Jimenez. That game saw two rain delays, the first of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. That's when Verlander, trying to finish before the rain came, made most of his mistakes. After the delay, he came out to finish the frame and put himself in line for the win.

"Tonight, definitely, was a big step forward," Verlander said after allowing five runs in five innings. "I was able to make some pitches when I needed to, and then I felt like I was able to find it there in the third and the fourth. And then the fifth inning, I got out to warm up and then [catcher Brayan] Pena gives me the [sign to] hurry up. I guess he had heard the rain was coming."

Indians: Third base not holding back Reynolds
Mark Reynolds became the Indians' everyday third baseman when the club optioned a struggling Lonnie Chisenhall to Triple-A Columbus on May 13. Since then, Reynolds is batting .173 (14-for-81) with two home runs and 27 strikeouts in 23 games. Francona, however, doesn't believe there's any correlation between the switch and the slump.

"I asked him that, because I wanted to know," Francona said on Wednesday. "I do think it's more physically challenging. I think he's enjoying the heck out of it, and he told me if he needed a [day off], he'd tell me."

Reynolds is hitting .242 with 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 57 games this year.

Tigers: Comerica Park a safe haven

Detroit has won 52 of its past 72 games at Comerica Park, dating back to July 4, 2012. The Tigers' .722 home winning percentage during that stretch is the highest in the American League.

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta has hit safely in 40 of his last 47 games, batting .361 (66-for-183) with 28 runs scored, 14 doubles, six homers and 25 RBIs in that span.

In 99 games against Cleveland, Miguel Cabrera is hitting .337 (130-for-386) with 20 doubles, 29 homers, 90 RBIs and 73 runs scored. He's walked 50 times and struck out in 68 at-bats.

Worth noting
With Wednesday's defeat, the Indians (30-29) fell to 2 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central. The Tigers split their last two games against the Rays this week to keep that lead at 2 1/2 games entering the weekend series against Cleveland.

Detroit has taken three of the first five meetings with the Tribe this season. The Tigers have outscored Cleveland in those games, 35-24.
