Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (2-3, 5.21 ERA)

Porcello had a run of 16 consecutive scoreless innings going before the Orioles got to him in the seventh inning Sunday. His curveball has him averaging two more strikeouts per nine innings than at any other time in his career.

Indians: RHP Justin Masterson (8-4, 3.57 ERA)

Masterson has been far from dominant over his last three outings. He's 1-2 with a 6.38 ERA in that span. On Monday, the Yankees torched him for seven runs on nine hits (two HRs) and three walks. He also struck out five.

Porcello faces Masterson in matchup of sinkerballers
Tigers look to take series while Indians try to end skid

By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 6/7/2013 11:31 PM ET

The Tigers have demonstrated patience with Rick Porcello this season, and he has rewarded his club with a strong showing of late.

Eventually, manager Jim Leyland envisions the 24-year-old Porcello (2-3, 5.21 ERA) developing into a more well-rounded, savvy sinkerballer.

"This guy's very young yet. That's why I talk about the process," Leyland said. "He's certainly not in the infant stage anymore, but this guy's still on the learning curve. This guy's doing very well, and he's starting to figure it out. Talent gets you here, and making adjustments keeps you here. He's certainly gotten better."

Indians sinkerballer Justin Masterson -- who will oppose Porcello when the Tigers and Tribe meet on Saturday -- endured a similar process when he first arrived in Cleveland in 2009. He has anchored the Indians' rotation since 2011, but appears to have turned a corner this season. His eight wins and two shutouts are tied for first in the American League and his 88 strikeouts ranks seventh.

As for Porcello, Leyland has been impressed with the right-hander's versatile repertoire. Porcello has compiled a 2-1 record and 3.48 ERA over his last seven outings.

"He's a sinkerballer, but he also can throw a ball 94 mph, four-seam up top," Leyland said. "And with a curveball and changeup, that's four pitches. The cutter makes it five, if you want to count that once in a while."

The Tigers claimed the first game of this weekend's three-game set with a 7-5 triumph on Friday at Comerica Park. With the win, Detroit pushed its advantage in the AL Central to 3 1/2 games. Cleveland fell back to .500 (30-30) with the loss. The Indians have dropped five consecutive games and are 4-13 over their last 17.

Indians: Reynolds seeking hits

• Mark Reynolds collected two hits in four at-bats on Friday to raise his batting average to .248. Reynolds is batting .188 (16-for-85) since May 12. Indians manager Terry Francona thinks the funk is merely a result of the ebbs and flows of a season. Reynolds' career average entering this season was .235.

"To be honest with you, he may not be a .300 hitter," Francona said. "That's not a knock on him. He was hitting .300 for a while, but guys usually gravitate towards their [career numbers]. He's gone through a little bit of a rough time, but he'll get hot again."

Reynolds has been playing more often at third base since Lonnie Chisenhall was demoted to Triple-A Columbus in mid-May. Francona said he doesn't think Reynolds' extra defensive demands have detracted from his performance at the plate.

"I think he's actually enjoying it a lot," Francona said. "Anything we've asked him to do, it seems like he enjoys it. We just kind of send him out there and let him play."

Tigers: Martinez heating up
• Since May 20, Victor Martinez is batting .323. He had three hits in four at-bats in Friday's win, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle. The designated hitter, who missed the entire 2012 campaign following knee surgery, has homered in consecutive games.

Worth noting

• Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is hitless in his last 20 at-bats.

• Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander notched his eighth win on Friday and is now tied for the AL lead in the category.

STARTING LINEUPS:

Saturday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Indians
BECK'S BLOG
Posted on June 8, 2013 at 2:30 pm

Originally, this was supposed to be Justin Masterson’s start for the Tribe. Instead, Masterson is starting Sunday, and Carlos Carrasco is making the start today. The Tigers have way fewer at-bats against Carrasco, but he held Miguel Cabrera to 1-for-7 in 2009 and 2010. Torii Hunter, on the other hand, is 3-for-6 with two home runs off of him. I had both of them on my Beat the Streak list when Masterson was the scheduled starter, but decided to go with Hunter by himself when the pitching change happened.
