Pitching matchup

Tigers: LHP Jose Alvarez (0-0, -.-- ERA)

Alvarez will be making his Major League debut against the Indians. He led the International League with 76 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings pitched. He has only walked 15 batters this season while sporting a 2.42 ERA.

Indians: RHP Justin Masterson (8-4, 3.57 ERA)

Masterson has been far from dominant over his last three outings. He's 1-2 with a 6.38 ERA in that span. On Monday, the Yankees torched him for seven runs on nine hits (two HRs) and three walks. He also struck out five.

PREVIEW
Masterson tasked with getting Tribe on winning track
Cleveland sends its ace to counter Sanchez substitute Alvarez

By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 6/9/2013 12:01 AM ET

As the Indians continue to slide and the gap between them and Tigers in the American League Central widens further, they have one saving grace coming on Sunday: They'll have their horse on the hill.

Justin Masterson had originally been slated to start on Saturday, but when right-hander Zach McAllister landed on the disabled list prior to the Indians' 6-4 loss at Comerica Park, the team pushed Masterson back a day and handed the ball to Carlos Carrasco. The reshuffling allows Carrasco to serve his eight-game suspension without disrupting the order of the rotation, with help from an off-day on Thursday.

McAllister is expected to miss two to four weeks with a sprained right middle finger.

"We're just being cautious with it," McAllister said. "We don't want it to lead to anything major that can last any longer. So we're just being safe and getting healthy."

Masterson has yet to face the Tigers this season. He fashioned a 2-2 record and 4.98 ERA against them in four encounters last year.

The Indians will need a strong effort from their ace as they attempt to halt a six-game losing streak. Since rattling off 18 wins in 22 contests, they have endured a 4-14 stretch.

"I just think we're going to figure this out," said manager Terry Francona. "In the meantime, sure, you hate to lose, and it's so personal. But we'll figure it out."

On Sunday they'll have to figure out Jose Alvarez if they hope to avoid a series sweep. Alvarez will be making his Major League debut after the Tigers scratched Anibal Sanchez, who is dealing with stiffness in his upper back.

The Tigers signed Alvarez, 24, over the winter as a Minor League free agent from the Marlins. He has a 5-4 mark and 2.42 ERA in 12 starts with Triple-A Toledo.

"He's been about the best pitcher in the International League," manager Jim Leyland said. "[He] was the recommendation that we got from our Minor League people."

Indians: Swisher mired in slump
First baseman Nick Swisher went 0-for-4 on Saturday to push his hitless streak to 24 at-bats.

"I know we're a lot better than this," Swisher said. "It just feels like we're one hit away from being right in these ballgames. I don't think it's really getting to many guys, but you're going to go through stretches like this. It's tough. It's not fun to go through them at all. We've got to find a way to pull together and get through all this."

Tigers: Sanchez avoids trip to DL
Sanchez and the team's medical staff believe that he will only miss one start. Sanchez experienced the same issue during Spring Training last season and was able to quickly put it behind him.

"I just missed one start," Sanchez said. "I took a couple days off and got ready, and nothing bothered me the rest of the season."

Worth noting
• Indians reliever Joe Smith lowered his ERA to 0.89 with a scoreless frame on Saturday.

• Francona was ejected from Saturday's game, the second time this season he has been tossed. Both instances came within the last week.

• After limiting Cleveland to one earned run over six innings on Saturday, Rick Porcello has a 3.24 ERA across his last eight starts.
