Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (8-0, 3.24  ERA)

Scherzer has won each of his first eight decisions this season, the longest streak by a Tigers pitcher since 2007. He earned the win against the Royals on April 24 despite giving up a season-high five earned runs.

Royals: RHP Wade Davis (3-5, 5.66 ERA)

Davis got himself into trouble in the first inning on Thursday night with a two-run homer but bore down and held the Twins scoreless over the next four to finish with four hits and no earned runs. He is winless in his last four starts.

PREVIEW

Royals look to stay hot against Scherzer, Tigers
Davis starts for Kansas City in club's bid for seven wins in a row

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 6/11/2013 12:05 AM ET

During the Royals' six-game winning streak, much has been made about the improved swings they've taken with George Brett as their new interim hitting coach. They've also gotten better pitching, allowing three runs or fewer in every game this month.

Kansas City will send right-hander Wade Davis to the mound on Tuesday hoping to continue its winning ways against Max Scherzer and the Tigers. Davis ran into trouble in the first inning last Thursday against the Twins -- allowing a two-run home run before tossing four scoreless innings. In his first year as a full-time starter with the Royals, Davis is still getting comfortable.

"[My] arm strength is getting up there," Davis said. "I feel like I'm getting stronger, the consistency is getting easier. Right now, I'm just working on fastball command."

For the Tigers, their road woes continued with Monday's 3-2 loss to the Royals in the series opener at Kauffman Stadium. Detroit fell to 13-17 overall and 1-5 in their last six games away from Comerica Park. The Tigers are batting .302 at home, compared to .261 on the road. The difference in OPS is 90 points despite the Tigers homering at a better rate away from their spacious home park.

"I thought we played two good games in Baltimore [on the last road trip]," manager Jim Leyland said. "I mean, we had the one lead. The other game was 2-0 in the seventh inning. It's not like we played bad. We just didn't score some runs. We gave a lead away. I don't think that's so bad."

The Tigers are hoping that Scherzer will help ease their road troubles. Already sporting an 8-0 record, Scherzer can become the team's first starting pitcher since Vern Kennedy in 1938 to start a season 9-0.

Royals: Bullpen made of Teflon
Starter Jeremy Guthrie departed with two runners on base and one out in a one-run game on Monday. Most teams would have panicked with the middle of the Tigers order due up at the plate. But not every club has the best bullpen ERA in the American League.

"We've got a great bullpen and everybody prepares different ways to go out there and do their job," right-handed reliever J.C. Gutierrez said. "We've got good guys that can go in the seventh like [Aaron] Crow and [Kelvin] Herrera, and closing by Holly [Greg Holland], and they've been doing a good job.

A good job, indeed. Crow was able to get Torii Hunter to fly out before striking out Miguel Cabrera to end a threat in the seventh inning on Monday. Royals' relievers lead the AL with a 2.84 ERA.

• The Royals lead the AL with 15 triples, the latest off the bat of Salvador Perez, whose hit plated two runs in a decisive three-run third inning on Monday.

Tigers: Martinez has been out of luck
Victor Martinez can't be satisfied that he's hitting .238 this season, after three consecutive season hitting above .300. However, that doesn't mean he hasn't hit the ball hard.

ESPN Stats and Information tracks the percent of at-bats ending in a hard-hit ball, regardless of outcome. Martinez ranks third among all Major League hitters at .250, and is the only player in the top 14 whose batting average sits under .250. Cabrera leads at .276.

• Leyland said right-hander Anibal Sanchez is feeling fine, by all reports, and should be on track to make his next scheduled start this weekend in Minnesota. Sanchez was scratched from Sunday's start against the Indians with stiffness around his upper back near his right shoulder.

• Center fielder Austin Jackson went 0-for-5 with a walk and three strikeouts in his first game during a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo. He was the designated hitter on Monday and is expected to play in the outfield on Tuesday.

Worth noting
• Alex Avila has a better slugging percentage against Davis than any other pitcher in the AL Central. In his career, he has two home runs and four walks in 11 plate appearances against the right-hander.
