Detroit Tigers AT Kansas City Royals
Wednesday, June 12, 2013
Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, MO
Game Time - 2:10 p.m. EDT

______________________________________

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (8-4, 3.71 ERA)

Verlander has earned a win in each of his last four starts. In his career, he is 15-2 against the Royals. He allowed one earned run in seven innings when he faced them on April 25, taking a no-decision.

Royals: RHP James Shields (2-6, 2.81 ERA)

Shields last won on April 30, but he's pitched so well that he has one of the AL's best ERAs. Only twice in 13 starts has he given up more than three earned runs. He and Verlander dueled marvelously, each without a decision, on April 25.

PREVIEW

Verlander, Shields square off in marquee matchup
Aces look to give clubs series win during finale at Kauffman Stadium

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 6/12/2013 12:23 AM ET

Of the six teams leading their division, the Tigers have the worst record on the road. While Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium was a good start, their best sign for a change in fortune is Justin Verlander taking the mound.

Despite a disastrous start here at last summer's All-Star Game, Verlander has thrived in Kansas City. In his career, the right-hander is 15-2 against the Royals with a 2.67 ERA, including a 9-2 career mark and 2.49 ERA at Kauffman Stadium, where he's 4-0 since 2010.

On the flip side, Royals ace James Shields doesn't lose to the Tigers very often either. He's 5-1 in 10 starts against Detroit with a 3.63 ERA. On April 25, Shields and Verlander squared off against each other. Shields allowed three runs on five hits in eight innings while Verlander countered by allowing one earned run in seven innings, but neither pitcher figured in the decision.

"Whenever you have some success against a team, you always have some confidence, but I don't look back at what I've done in the past, and they've got a really good team over there," said Shields, who hasn't earned a win since April 30 despite a 2.81 ERA. "Their hitters are probably one of the best lineups in the league. You've just got to go out and pitch your game and hope for the best."

For all the talk about what's up with Verlander, and an ERA that would be the second highest of his career if he ended the season with it, he has more wins at this point of the season than in any previous year.

"That's pretty good to me," manager Jim Leyland said. "The idea is to win games. That's what you're supposed to do up here."

Verlander's also 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA in eight day games this season, and 52-18 with a 2.81 ERA in day games for his career.

Royals: Top draft picks begin signing deals
Hunter Dozier, the Royals' first-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft and eighth selection overall, came to terms with the club on Monday for a $2.2 million deal. The team also signed their second-round pick, left-handed pitcher Cody Reed, near slot value on Tuesday.

"I got to take a deep breath once they called my name," Dozier said, "and now I'm just looking forward to heading up to Arizona."

Through Tuesday night, the Royals have agreed to deals with 18 of their 41 picks.

Right-hander Felipe Paulino made a strong step in the right direction as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. He made a rehab start at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday and struck out six while walking two in five shutout innings. He threw 42 strikes in 67 pitches.

Fox Sports Kansas City earned its highest-rated Royals telecast ever in Monday night's 3-2 victory against the Tigers. Royals telecasts are up 39 percent from last year's numbers and Monday's win generated a 8.1 household rating in the Kansas City market, according to the Nielsen Media Research.

Tigers: Dotel's recovery is complicating
Octavio Dotel has reportedly been experiencing more discomfort in his right elbow while rehabbing in Florida after being placed on the disabled list nearly two months ago.

"I don't know what's going on with Dotel," Leyland said. "I think he's just trying to see if he still has it."

Dotel is in the final year of his deal. The Tigers picked up his contract option for this season after he played a vital role in shoring up the bullpen last year.

Austin Jackson went 1-for-3 in his first game in center field during a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo. He played five innings Tuesday, and after an off-day on Wednesday, he will either play seven innings in center or a full game at designated hitter on Thursday.

Expect Leyland to go with a few more right-handed hitters against Shields Wednesday. The right-hander currently is holding left-handed hitters to a .198 average compared to .273 righties. Shields has similar reverse splits for his career, but not nearly so big. Matt Tuiasosopo will definitely play, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the switch-hitting Brayan Pena spelling the struggling Alex Avila behind the plate.

Worth noting
Nobody has hit Verlander quite like Billy Butler. Among players with at least 25 at-bats against the five-time All-Star, Butler leads all hitters with a .418 batting average. In 55 career at-bats, he has four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs.

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta has three career home runs off Shields in 24 at-bats, tied for the most against any pitcher he's faced in his career.
