GDT70: 6/19/13 - DET (39-30) VS BAL (41-31)  -  1:08 p.m. ET

--- VS ---

Detroit Tigers VS Baltimore Orioles
Wednesday, June 19, 2013
Comerica Park, DETROIT, Mi
Game Time - 1:08 p.m. EDT

______________________________________

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (4-3, 4.37 ERA)

Porcello tossed seven shutout innings vs. the Twins on Friday, giving up three hits and struck out five. The righty showed continued growth in his secondary pitches, which set up his sinker -- something Jim Leyland believes has made a difference.

Orioles: RHP Chris Tillman (7-2, 3.61 ERA)

Tillman handcuffed the Red Sox's lineup for six-plus shutout innings on Friday in his most recent start. He's won four of his past five starts, and in his past three, he's 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA.

PREVIEW

Tillman looks to stay hot in June against Tigers
Porcello seeks third straight victory and series win vs. O's

By Quinn Roberts / MLB.com | 6/18/2013 10:58 PM ET

It's been a pretty good month for Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman.

He has managed to go 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in June, holding opponents to just four runs in 19 innings over three starts.

Tillman will look to keep that streak going on Wednesday as the Orioles and Tigers square off in the series finale at Comerica Park.

Handcuffing the Red Sox in his last start, Tillman (7-2, 3.61 ERA) allowed just three hits in six innings of work for his seventh win of the season.

"Chris [went to Spring Training] knowing full well that he was out of options," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said, "But he pitched like a guy who had three [options remaining] and didn't want to go to [Triple-A] Norfolk. And that shows a lot of maturity, because he wanted to be a guy for us this year, and he has been so far."

Rick Porcello (4-3, 4.37 ERA) will be on the hill for the Tigers, looking for his third straight win.

The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings against the Twins last Friday, allowing three hits and striking out five. It marked only the third time this season he pitched seven-plus innings.

"He was terrific," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after the start. "He kept the ball on the ground. A good sinker, but the stuff that really set his sinker up lately is his secondary stuff. They're not just sitting on a fastball any more. That's been a huge difference for him in my opinion."

By throwing his breaking ball for strikes and using his changeup, Porcello feels he's had more success this season.

"My off-speed stuff is getting a lot better, so I'm going to continue to get breaking pitches over the plate and switch up my pitches," Porcello said. "That's what's helping me this year have some success."

Orioles: Ishikawa added to roster
• Travis Ishikawa was in the Orioles lineup for Tuesday's game against the Tigers, batting eighth and serving as the designated hitter.

The team placed Miguel Gonzalez on paternity leave to clear space on the roster.

Ishikawa had exercised his opt-out clause and would have become a free agent if he hadn't been promoted or traded. He can't be optioned back to Triple-A and must be outrighted, so he could refuse an assignment to Triple-A.

Ishikawa went 0-for-4 on Tuesday with two strikeouts.

Tigers: V-Mart an emergency option
• Detroit isn't ruling out having Victor Martinez catch in a game this season, but it would have to be in an emergency.

Alex Avila's deep forearm contusion doesn't present such an emergency scenario. Though Avila could be ready to catch again in just a few days, the team felt it was a safer move to put him on the 15-day disabled list and call up Bryan Holaday.

"You can catch Victor, sure," Leyland said. "But that would be [as] a third guy."

Worth noting
• In six career starts against the Orioles, Porcello is 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA.

• Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen could rejoin the team before the All-Star break as the lefty continues to progress favorably from a left oblique strain.
